what do you consider a chopper? a midsize knife? a small knife? etc etc

for ME (your milage might vary) a small knife is my Becker BK7, anything smaller is considered a pocket knife (even if its fixed blade), and a chopper is any machete or 14" or bigger knife, like my Kabar Khukuri.

Wow, you must have some awefully large pockets if a under 7" bladed FB is a pocket knife to you. That would mean anything with an OAL of under 11" or so is a pocket knife?

I think most people would consider knives with blades over 7" to be a large knife & possibly even a chopper. I would think a FB with a blade between 3-7" would be a med. knife & if it has an OAL of under 6" (& probably more like 5"), I would then consider it a pocket knife for FBs (Mainly because that's what I could fit in my pockets).

For folders, I'd say anything that's under 6" closed could be a pocket knife. If it's longer than that, it probably won't fit fully into the pocket & would need a sheath/pouch.

I'd venture a guess here: choppers start around nine inches or better, probably closer to 12.

The Buck 119 for example, is most certainly not a chopper. Mid-size blade is closer to a Buck 110, a smaller knife has a blade of 2.5 inches or less.

For me:

Pocket knife= ANY knife that I can fit in my pocket without part of it sticking out.

Small fixed blade= Fixed blade with blade 4" or under.

Medium fixed blade= Fixed blade with blade 4.5" to 7.5".

Large fixed blade= Fixed blade with blade 8" or longer.

Some of these may overlap (ie., small fixed blade could possibly be a pocket knife, I have a few smallish/ medium fixed blades, etc.).
