Got up early this morning and drove up to Solingen to see what the 2023 Knife show had to offer. It was a nice show, very good attendance for the size, with a lot of makers most of us have never seen. So here's my take on it, focusing mainly on stuff I like (older patterns, traditionals, etc). There were not a lot of slipjoints; which kind of surprised me, because there were a fair number of folders on display. The majority was fixed blades, and about 10% of the show was dealer/distributors and another 15% was tools, gadgets, and supplies. the big names like Boker and Wusthoff had booths, and there were several others (mostly kitchen knives) whose names I've seen, but who are not common in the USA.

One of the makers with slipjoints was Sr. Frizzi from Italy who had these traditional patterns and also the cut away patterns.

Just down from Boker; Craig Brosman had a nice display of Loveless pattern fixed blades. He was the only American maker I saw (although I may have missed some). Craig had just wrapped up an exhibit at the Solvang show before he flew here.

Hubertus had a large number of books and knives available and the booth was pretty popular. They were the only maker I saw with automatics.

Otter Messer had a large number of their own patterns available with multiple finishes. Their wharnecliff swaybacks were tempting, but I dislike brass bolsters.

On the other end of the scale Reinhardt Tschager had some exceptionally fine custom pieces including this engraved and inlaid integral dagger.

Wonderfully done! Thank you for sharing that!

And since it just wouldn't be a knife show without a Bowie or two, I'll wrap this up with these from Arman Drumm.
Thanks for a tour of the show, Eisman!! Great pictures!! Very interesting; some amazing work!!

Very nice Kevin...brightened up an otherwise dull wet cold Sunday morning...So did you venture to Solingen solely for the show?
Cheers.

what did you come away with??
Fair question, and since I didn't take photos at the show, and it would not be fair not to mention the makers I did buy from, Here's an addition:

Riccardo Mainolfi had this Loveless pattern City Knife and it just struck too many chords for me not to buy. It's an integral design, one of my favorite patterns, slim and not too big, with lovely green hand picked bone scales. The MOP inset in the bolsters was just different enough to wrap up the package. I will need to find someone to make a proper carry sheath for it though.

I also picked up a pocket steak knife from Paul Adrian Stahlwarenfabrik, a company that specializes in kitchen knives and that is not well know in USA but does good business in Europe. This knife was designed from their regular pattern steak knives, but as a pocket version because the founder got tired of lousy knives when he went to a restaurant and wanted something anyone could take and eat well with. They come with an assortment of wood scales (this one is olive wood) and are true slipjoints with a half stop.

Yes I did. It was a decent enough day for a drive, foggy in the morning, cleared up some, and then raining in the afternoon. The fog slowed the autobahn down more than the rain, but it's about a 3 hour drive for me from where I'm at now.

I stopped and crawled around a old ruined castle for a bit on the way back to clear my head and get me out of the car for a bit. Here's a couple shots of Burg Olbruck. It's a fair climb up the hill, and i even climbed the tower (only to find the top deck closed off) but you can see a lot of country from up there. It's probably nicer when it's not raining.
