knife stains. what to do?

Hey guyz. i ahvent posted for a while but i got this dark smudge stain on my knife handle. Any ideas what this is and how to get rid of it?

Doesnt seem to come off and i'm afraid to use metal polish as my stainless steel handle has a matte finish and this might put a shiny smudge on my handle.

What you are finding out the hard way is that no stainless steel is truely stainless. I hate to say it, but the only way I know of to remove metal stain is with a metal polish. I can't think of any chemical treatment. The one thing I would look into trying before using any abrasive polish would be a silver polishing cloth. They are 100% non-abrasive cotton (usually a blend) cloths that are impregnated with some sort of chemical that reacts with the tarnish in silver and removes it quite well. It's a last resort, but it may jsut work. You can pick these up at about any jewelry store.
