I’m new to knife making and live in Canada. I will be traveling to North Dakota and Minnesota this coming week and would like to source somewhere that sells higher carbon steel, 15n20 and powdered steel as this is very hard to find where I’m from.

Any help with possible resellers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You will probably have better luck if you post this in the Shop Talk section of the General Knifemakers subforum.

I live in Alberta and order my steel from AKS (alpha knife supply). Not much luck sourcing in .

You can get carbon and stainless from knifemaker.ca, but the selection is just the most common stuff. Great people to deal with. For more exotic steels, you can get steel from Alpha Knife Supply. If you just want O1, go to any metal supermarket.

You waited a bit too late to help this trip, but what many Canadian folks do for small tools, steel, and supplies is order them from one of the US suppliers and have them sent to the US address they will be visiting. Then they take them home with then on the return trip.

Jantz, SB Specialty Metals, Admiral Steel and the NJ Steel Baron all stock CPM alloys along with other steels. We ship small quantities of steel to Canada and overseas via USPS and they probably can too.

Not to rain on this ... but it occurred to me to ask if there are any export restrictions on the materials ... especially the newer more exotic materials?

I would not think Customs at the border crossing would consider a few bars of steel worth less than $100 any different than those who drive across the border for a grocery or clothing shopping trip. If flying, just put it in your suitcase, same as if you bought a new jacket or watch.

Now, if you are planning on picking up a forge or TW-90, then they may want to know the value and figure the duty.

If you have any doubts, call the local customs office.

I was not thinking duty ... I was thinking of bans on export of certain technology ... usually this is software or electronics ... but was wondering if some of the advance materials might be included in that category....

No issue with any steel i’ve ordered so far.

I got a bill from customs on my December 2018 order, cost of the steel before shipping was around $270 USD. i was charged, upon pickup, around $50 CAD for tariffs and GST.

No problem on steel . Tariffs is gone so you will just have to pay your taxes. All the knife shops in the US will ship to Canada. If you make a large order you might need a import permit and a broker. Import permit is free. Small orders always ask them to ship by USPS.
