Ok so Im web researchin and phone book checking....To find 1084, 1095, L6 or 15n20....So far Ive been told that as36 and a 36 is the same.....Is there other trade names for these steels.. I just want to find local materials so I dont have to wait on mail order....
thanks....

I thought A36 was recyceled junk steel, I nticed on some site the have this "A" desegnation attached to A36,A50,A85...One site even called it astm36" high carbon" WTH...

Thanks SAM (1234567) I have that link....And non of those ar local...Kelly is close but its a ferry ride both ways and 100 mile round trip...Surley these steels that we use have differet industrial applications and are available in or around seattle

The only steels that will make a decent blade that you may find locally will be tool steels like O1, A2, or D2 from a machine shop or machine shop supply. But you're gonna be better off and a lot cheaper buying from a knifemaking supply place.

I live in an industrial center too, and have searched for years.

It makes no sense for me either to have heavy steel shipped so far, but I havent found anything closer either.

1045 precision ground and polished shafting, and W1 precision ground drilll rod are the closest I have found to those steels.

A36 only has a tensile strength designation, as far as I know. It could be carbon steel or otherwise, depending on what was thrown into the melt. Kelly is very fast to ship, you're only going to be out a couple days and you'll save a lot of pain.

Frontier
take the advise and just call Kelly ..he is very good people and a day or so wait ,no need for a long road trip ..the only thing you Might find local is from a custom car "Spring Shop" usually 5160, no l-6 15N20,W2
Shipping can't cost more than the Ferry ride to &From plus gas &Time

And I think he still offers free shipping with a 100 dollar order.Call him to be sure.

ok point taken......Now all I need to research is what get and where to get some materials for a crucible or bloomery melt....

I've ordered mine from a local boat builder/machineshop. My stuff gets added to his orders and I guess prices are good. 18" x 3/16th,1.5 in wide 01 was 18 bux last time. took about week.
he gets it's from the east coast somewhere

There has got to be some boatworks/machine shop places on Whidbey that could order you some good stuff.
you'll find many in those jobs are creative mad scientist types(in a good way), that love helping out people with thier hobbies

good luck to you

Finding high carbon steel locally is not easy. I am lucky to have a source 50 miles one way from my house. But they only have 5160 and 1095 that I normally used. You need to order it in or take the trip and stock up. You will find most makers are steel whores and have a pretty large stash of material. I should have more than enough to last the rest of my life now. But then again, I have that urge to get some more of Dons W-2.:D

Seattle pottery supply for the crucible and refractory. western abrasive for hemitite blasting medium for iron ore. Check with a building center to find ceramic chimney liners for the smelter.

Thanks all
Bill thanks for the Hematite info I get stuff at seattle pottery all the time, at least there is some pottery and glass suppliers closer than seattle to me......Before I undertake a smelt or crucible project I need to find some seattle guys who what to do a smelt, share the time, expence and knowledge...maybe a workshop huh...

Hey Robert,

If you want to do a workshop sometime I would love to come up and lend a hand. I have a friend up in Oak Harbor I need to visit and this would give me another excuse to get my butt up there. I have no experience in the smelting area but I think I could help with other aspects.

chuck, sounds good, IM not sure if there are other forum/abs members up here, I know Matt Disken is a neighbor, and there are some experience blacksmith in the erea...I need to find more interested local smiths, I might search around on don foggs forum in the bloomery forum...

Matt lives on the south end of the island. Dave Lisch lives up your way and may want to participate. Michael Rader, Tom Ferry and a few others live up there too. Some would be willing to travel if we had enough other stuff going on. A full on hammer in if you have the space and equipment available. I might even be willing to bring up my anvil and forge. Let me know if you get any other interest.
