I have just started reading Blade again, and understand the difference, somewhat, between Carbon and stainless steel. I can follow the conversation where Carbon V, ATS 34, 440 and AUS8 steels are concerned. I even know a little bit about D2. But when makers and collectors start throwing out all these different specific steels, it feels like my head is going to explode  ! I wrote to Blade magazine, asking them to clarify all of the different steels for simpleton collectors like myself, and they said that was a great idea for an article! In the meantime, any clarification on this? Any cheap books I can get at the library or buy? What steel should I be looking for for a light use EDC? How about for a camp knife? A skinning knife? A survival/bug out blade? A boat knife?

Buy a knife in your price range, in a pattern that fills your needs, from a reputable company. The actual differences among steels will be minor compared to the effect of blade geometry, heat treat, and usage level.

There are some differences in sharpenability, toughness, and corrosion-resistance. Here's a recent thread with some basic information: Blade Steels - Quick Definitions.

I have a Helle futura which is stainless steel it works great for skinning animals and gutting bigger fish.
