ok folks, as far as ease of availability and ease of heat treat, and factoring in toughness etc. what is the best steel to use .... when you are looking for a hard use knife, similar to busse's reputation, d2 seams to be a lil hard to find in the size i want and hard to have heat treated.

Are you going to be doing the heat treat, or will you have someone else do it?

What size knife is it for and for what intended purpose?

You will probably get more help if you post in the knifemakers forum.

From what it sounds like so far, 1075 or 1080 might be what you're looking for.

i 2nd 1080....and yea just look around on the knifemakers forum and they will help u...them folk are very nice...

Basic stuff works: 1055, 1075, 1080 and so on. 5160 is also hella tough for something you want to beat on.

I love VG10 for smaller knives and folders.

All the rest give me 5160, 1095, 52100.
