I saw this Pelican Case offered for sale at one of the online knife retailers, and it got me wondering how many people use these type of cases to store their knives in, and how how you like it? Not a bad idea for knife storage - I guess you get a big enough clear case and it would be good for storage and to see your knives in that clear case...

For long term storage the foam attracts water and oils and will break down. It will also damage anything in with it when this happens. Every gunsmith I know gets guns in that have been "in the case" and are now rusted past redemption.

If you must use a Pelican case, dump the foam. Use individual sleeves or cases.

For $25 I'd rather get a Kershaw/ZT knife bag. It's padded, has room for 18+ knives. You could easily add more pages inside and store watches, knives, flashlights, etc.

You are correct the foam will breakdown, but it takes many years. Basically seems to dry out and become almost a powder.
I used this type of thing for cameras, and worked great till the foam borke down. Never used it for my guns, so I'm not sure about the rust factor, but I have the feeling you may be correct.

The Pelicans are great cases (though dang expensive), but the Pelican w/foam is probably best for relatively short term storage or transport.
