Knife Storage Question...

Hi I am curious, what is the best way to store my knives & is there some sort of cabinet/safe I can buy? I like to keep my knives in their boxes as I am a collector, I have axes and machetes as well so nothing really small... right now I just have my knives in a airtight plastic container under my futon, it's a very dry spot and I check up on my knives to make sure nothing is wrong with them such as rusting or anything like that.

Clean any salt or acids off then paste wax the blades. The original packaging should be fine. That's what I use though I don't store in any leather sheaths. If the original packaging has that special anti rust paper by all means use it. Same with the cardboard edge protector.

If you do this properly and store it indoors in a not too humid environment you should be good to go for a while. Months to years depending on conditions. Good luck.

Joe

If you want a safe, your best bet would be to find the smallest suitable gun safe, apply some wax based protectant (Ren wax or comparable) and a bunch of silica gel packets for humidity control.

I store all my knives in a bucket out back that also serves the purpose of a flower pot it works great but there is sometimes rust problems.

On the non joking side I put them all In a pelican case

Thanks for your recommendations guys, I was actually looking at pelican cases (especially the 1740 case) they make great stuff but what do you guys mean by wax? You want me to put wax on my blades? I'm not sure if I would want to do that... I have blades In there that I had for 8 years with no wax & that's on my cheap $40 knife i got (my 1st knife) also most of my knives have kydex sheaths and I got 1 leather sheath.

Not a fan of Ren Wax at all. Didn't stop rust from showing up on satin SR-101. SoCal.

How to use Renaissance wax
Renaissance Wax is a micro-crystalline wax that has been specifically blended to have a crystalline structure that is much finer than totally natural waxes (such as beeswax or carnauba wax) which makes it highly moisture resistant.

Easy to apply, Renaissance Wax needs only to be lightly and evenly applied to a surface and then gently buffed to full lustre with either the use of a soft, lint-free cloth or a soft wax polishing brush. When dried the wax forms a hard film that isn't sticky like oil and protects against not only moisture and other environmental pollutants but also damage from handling resulting from the natural acidity of the human touch. The matured film has a silk-smooth feel that is comfortable to handle but is also clear and offers no loss in clarity, ensuring that no fine surface detail is obscured. Surfaces protected by Renaissance Wax are easily cleaned of any greasy dirt from handling by gently rubbing them with a soft rag dampened with paraffin; or as an alternative, warm water with a little liquid soap. Removing the wax film is also simple as the film can be completely removed by rubbing with white spirit.

I've used it on a few knives that I've had in storage and had no issues.

I saw that Harbor Freight has some storage cases like the Pelican, been looking at them to give them a try.
