knife storage question

I've been looking for a better storage option for my knives than the jewelry drawer in the top of my dresser. It's actually a good place for them; felt lined, easily accessable, and big - just not big enough.

I'de love to get a Gerstner, but I don't know if I'm willing to pony up $750 for a box. They have an "international" line now, for considerably less money, but they are probably made in the same factories as the $150 knock-offs that even the sellers say are pretty poor quality.

Anyway, I'm outgrowing my current storage, and I need something more. I'm not so much into display as having a safe place to keep them until I have another chance to fondle my lovelies.

Any suggestions?

Try making one of your own. Go to a crafts store and buy a wooden box with lid, some foam padding and felt. You can stain it, paint it or pretty much do anything to decorate it.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jeff, although it's a tad gay. What are the side panel things for, anal bead storage?

If you follow the link you can find more manly styles of armoire. The Mission Oak style is built more like a toolbox. I use the side panels on mine to hang cables and rechargers, it is pretty handy for that. There are a zillion of these things. You can do a google image search and look for something more appealing. You could also go down to an oak furniture store and find something on the rugged side. The main thing I was trying to convey is the name "jewelry armoire" since they fit the need and are very common.

Now my knife collection will not fit in a jewelry armoire, but they will fit most collections plus extra sheaths.

An excellent way to store and display knives is The Tom Way

Be very careful about "felt lined" because not all felt is color-fast. Some knife materials such as woods, bone, ivory, etc. can absorb dyes from the felt and be hopelessly colored themselves.

When mine are stored, the live in Bill's Custom Cases.

I recently purchased a Gerstner International box, and can tell you that the quality is pretty good... granted it is not on par with the American made box, but it ain't bad. I found a 10 drawer version off the internet for about 280 bucks, including shipping. I have a collection of about 100 knives including both slip joint, tactical folders, and fixed blades that all fit in my Gerstner.

But wait there's more call within the next ten minutes and we'll double your order, plus there's more we will fill with knives of your choice for one low low price of $ 19.99

I heard somewhere that oak puts out a chemical that can damage knives. Anyone here heard of that?

Tannin? I've heard of it. It's the same stuff used in making the vegetable-tanned leather used in sheaths.
