Knife storage tip

For years I have been looking for a cheap, efficient way to store knives in my shop. Recently I noticed that Wal-Mart carries a line of plastic Plano boxes intended for fishing. These boxes are 2 inches high and come in different sizes, the largest being about 9x14 inches. They have four long compartments and a bunch of removable dividers. (What I had seen in the past did not have removable dividers.) If you do not use the dividers, these boxes are excellent for storing knives all the way up to 14 inches long. Since each knife is in it's own plastic compartment, no special wrapping is needed to protect them. You can label the boxes and stack them on a shelf and the boxes are clear enough so you can see what's in them without opening the box. Most of the boxes cost about $3.

Hope this helps.

I use these boxes for fittings, screws, drill bits, pin material, and what not. They work great for that as well.

What are some of ways that you other folks store stuff like pins, screw, etc.? I am always looking for a better way.......

The guy who is teaching me how to make knives built a little rack that holds plastic test tubes that shooters come in! The shots are disgusting, but the tubes are nice and long. He then just sticks his pin material in the test tubes and the rack is mounted on the wall behind his work bench. Works good for Les Allen! As for me, I'm working on knife #4 of my budding hobby so I have everything from handle material to pins in a box top! One day I'll have a bunch of materials requiring a more unique storage method... maybe even using plastic shooter test tubes!

CL, try cigar tubes and wide elastic under shelves. You tack the elastic up so it looks like a shotshell bandolier and just insert the cigar tubes. label the caps and you have sealed storage for small stuff. I just set this up for jeweler saw and scroll saw blades.
