Knife Storage

My collection has expanded to the point that I need a centralized place to store all of my knives and sharpening gear. I'm looking to go cheep on this ($100 budget) and will most likely be building this myself. The question is what materials etc to use. I had considered using some old wormy chestnut boards, but they're too warped to be of use for this. Also, should I put doors on it or not? The only thing I'm sure of at the moment is that it needs to be bigger than needed so there's room for future knives etc.

Security should be your primary concern. Whether that means complete burglary protection, or simply keeping the collection safe from curious house guests and kids... well that's up to you.

I use a plastic 3 drawer container from wal-mart lined with rubber padding on the bottom and the knives lay on bandana's. I have hundreds of knives but only keep my "good" ones in there, recently I outgrew it though so my last 20 knives or so are just laying out on my dining room table lol but I don't mind because I can look at them anytime I want.

Don't know if you're storing folders or fixed blades, but you could pick up an old Gerstner tool chest and refinish(or not)

I use a cheat glass display. Works great to display my knives and keeps them clean from dust and such

Storing both folders, fixed blades and sharpening gear. Got a few boards for fairly cheep and going to be building a nice set of shelves tomorrow weather permitting.

Currently storing mine in a large lockable storage totes, and separated in smaller, manageable totes. Pain in the butt to get to when it's locked and in the garage, but secure from the kids. BUT..... wife's company is moving locations, and has a 2 drawer lateral file cabinet hat is otherwise finding a home in a storage unit, SO....... it's mine, it locks, and, best of all, my wife ACTUALLY suggested we put it in our BEDROOM! Caveat: she has creative control on how it's new look evolves. Which means, probably not going to have the most manly outside color.

Enjoy your pink cabinet!
I use an old wooden desk that was sitting around at my parents house. It has drawers that I lined with towels to set the knifes on. I keep my supplies in the top of the desk. (Folding top) you might want to check some garage sales or Craigslist before building something!
As for your original question: I would either put in drawers or doors, but you need some way to keep prying little hands and eyes off the knives. Something that you could lock would be a plus:thumbup:

Be careful with the fabric/felt that you choose as it may transfer the dyes to the scales.

Likely just using the stuff that's used to line kitchen drawers (similar to the foamish toolbox drawer liners) to line the shelves. I've never had a problem with the stuff transferring the color to anything.

Yeah, that rubberish cabinet/drawer matting is good stuff, right up there with duct tape WD-40 and bailing wire.

I just converted an old 3 drawer all steel filing cabinet into my tool chest.

A toolbox with sliding drawers may be something to look into, and you can pick one up with a lock on it to keep prying eyes or kids out of it.
