Knife Storage

Hey everyone! I've been lurking here on BF for a few years now, without really posting much. I usually just use it to do research on knives and see what people are saying about them. I'm at the point where I need a more realistic storage system for my knives. The current safe I have is about a foot and a half tall by a foot wide. I keep my nice things in there, but it's still cluttered. I was curious as to how you all prefer to store your knives, whether t be a large safe or the foam padded cases with the slits or pockets in them. I've been having a hard time finding these things online and was wondering if any of you knew websites to look at these things! Any help or suggestions are welcome of course!

My system is a big lockbox but functionally it wouldn't be any different that what you have now... I keep most knives and extra sharpening equipment and tools in there as well... I stack them all neatly but it is still, definitely, cluttered, so not as fancy or protected as a padded case, sorry to say.

Here are a couple of my Spyderpacs behind the Lums. A large and a small.
There are clear pockets to hold the knives inside.
I'm sure a short search will get some better pictures.

I have about 7 knife rolls I keep my knives in except for one solitary Case Celluloid suicide bomber peanut I keep in a Kraft cheese jar with a resealable lid. I have each brand or pattern in a roll with sub patterns in rolls like one roll has my Case stags and Case limited editions, one has my Case selects and one has standards and Case rare acquisitions, one has Mostly Case SFOs, one roll of Kershaw's, one roll of advertising knives. My fixed blades are kind of spread out in the house either due to size or handmades. My illumination gear is all over the house so they can be found when power is out. Oh yeah switchblades and other autos are in their own roll too. If I am out of things to do I'll grab a roll and the Simichrome paste and Renaissance wax and polish, shine and just look at with minimal drooling. Two knives are in individual leather solo pouches, a Spyderco Kiwi and a Schrade 7409SSD sterling silver "auto" gentlemans folder with one pen blade and one nail-file tool. Murphys laws say as soon as I hit post I'll remember another stash of knives.:D

Since I'm currently at college, most of my knives are home (with the exception of my 0560, 0801, PM2, Szabo, Gerber Applegate fairbairn, and CRKT my-tighe which i took the torsion bar out of and its a million times better IMO). But at home I have a safe with my nicer stuff, like my Spyderco Civilian and Spyderco Endura with the damascus blade and orange jigged bone. Outside of the safe I have two empty plastic paintball boxes which I put misc. gear and knives and then a W.B. Mason box that I keep most of my fixed blades, other than the ones I EDC. Since the garage is my dad's domain, I mostly keep my stuff in my room where its all accounted for. I guess I just need more space and a better system. It may be time to get rid of a few things!

Sounds nice and organized to me! I'm usually a very organized person, but when it comes to my knives I have a tougher time organizing them! I hope to change that though

Yea I may have to buy a few of these, but I feel compelled to only put Spyderco knives in them...but that may just be me justifying another Spyderco purchase :p

I found one of the Plano tackle boxes, intended for fishing gear. This one was cheap at Walmart. I have all of my EDC folders in this one. I cut some dividers out of packing foam to separate the knives so I can put 2 in each slot so I holds a total of 16. I think for most of my knives I could put 3 in each slot for a total of 24. If I was collecting smaller knives such as minigrips I could divide each long slot into 3 smaller slots and fit 36 knives in it.

The interesting thing about these Plano boxes is that they make various containers for stacking and carrying multiples of these. I think they have a larger box that holds 4 of these, meaning you could carry up to 144 of your favorite knives with you very easily.

They make medication for that. ;)

I use one of those little plastic drawer units you get at Walmart. I line the drawers with that on stick padding you can get that's made for kitchen drawers/cabinets. Works great.

I use both the Spyderco SpyderPac (small and large) and the ZT/Kershaw bags. SpyderPacs have the advantage that you can see the knives without taking them out but don't provide enough cushioning. The ZT/Kershaw bags are compact and provide good cushioning but the compartments can be tight and scuff the scales since the material isn't so soft.

Sounds like me when I was at university. Took a few with me and my parents looked after the rest, they just sat in a drawer in my dorm room. I lived alone so I didn't have to worry about it really.

I hear you on the more space, although for now I'm trying to limit myself to what fits in the lock box, as well as a small number of usual EDC knives that I keep in a clear Tupperware case that sits on top of the box. I have

The clear plastic case for a small number of EDCs (these get rotated out once in awhile

The lock box where the bulk of the collection and maintenance equipment goes

A knife roll that holds most of my expensive/discontinued models.

The box that holds the majority of the collection contains probably in the region of 130 knives, and I told myself when that starts getting completely full (as it almost is now) I'd quit buying for awhile.

My system consists of scattering them all over the apartment. I have a Benchmade pouch-thingy that holds a number of knives. I only put knives there that I don't use in there. I also have a knife stand that holds a few knives, but I have too many "current" knives to fit in it. I guess I should allocate some space for the knives in a drawer.

This is what I do as well for my EDC folders. Love it too because it was kinda free considering I do a bunch of fishing and these things tend to accumulate after a while. Heck even if you don't have these just sitting around I think for like 5 bucks at that Huge Conglomerate Store.

I use cigar boxes. They're free at almost any cigar and pipe store. I just store them under an end table in my den.

I found an old storage chest at an antique market for $50 last year. Looks like one of the Gerstner chests that A. G. sells. It has a top section with a hinged lid, 3 full-width drawers on the bottom, and 6 half-width drawers above them. It stores quite a few FBs and folders, although space is getting tight right now.

I store the knives and FB sheaths there and keep the boxes separate in a big bin.

I'd been researching storage options myself. My wife bought me this Gerstner chest for my B-day this year (in lieu of another knife:p). They aren't cheap, but if you have a couple thousand $ worth in knives, why not drop a little coin on classy storage? I'm very happy with it, and there are a few empty drawers screaming to be filled. Enough space for my meager flashlight collection too.

Well, you get the idea...

I just use a Craftsman toolbox with roll out drawers. Works well.

Only issue I have is running out of space. :D

Oh man, I think you may have just broken my wallet haha. I was thinking a Pelican 1600, but this looks mighty nice too! Also I have the damascus orange jigged bone endura to your blue damascus/bone endura! Great collection, I really want a black-bladed Bedlam. How do you like it? I also just got some custom work done to my ZT 0801 :)
