I'm looking to get a Pelikan Case for knife storage as they have a lot of good reviews for being hard to break and such. Just wondering what the best padded models are?

I can't recommend a particular model, but just wondering if you've seen the Seahorse/Serpac cases? Not as fancy as Hurricane or Pelican cases, but a fraction of the cost and plenty durable enough for carrying pocketknives. We've been using Seahorse cases to carry scientific instruments into underground coal mines and other industrial environments for years without a single failure.

Would they be strong enough to withstand TSA searches for checked in luggage? And do they have specific storage compartments or the pick and pluck foam like Pelikan?

You can buy them with or without foam. They are all single-compartment.

TSA is known more for stealing things that for breaking luggage cases... so I'm not sure if I understand the question. Some come with a lock or locking latches; they can all be locked with a TSA lock.

I have heard countless stories of TSA both stealing items and damaging items. I am going towards Pelikan because of the pick and pluck foam to create individual spaces for each knife/pen/tool that I would be storing.

what about a display case for the home. something to hold maybe 25 -30 pocket folders.

The point of a "TSA" lock is that the TSA can open it easily for inspection. With a lock that isn't TSA approved, they cut it off for inspection, potentially leaving the case without a lock for the remainder of the trip. According to recent statistics, baggage handles steal five times more than TSA personnel.

The case brand, of course, makes no difference in that issue.

You may consider shipping your knives in a case of your choosing rather than carrying and checking however much the value of your knives combined are. I sure as hell wouldn't travel with a case full of knives checked on a plane. That is asking for them to be stolen along with a convenient carry pack for the thief.

Thanks for the info. I've never heard of this brand before. If you're using it for scientific equipment in what sounds like harsh environments and have never failed, it must be pretty decent stuff.

Hey guys, sorry for my lack of response. To be honest, I don't know how this got to the TSA point! I was looking for a case that could fit a large collection and have the slots be customizable so I could keep pens and such in there as well and if I were to travel with it, that it would be able to withstand any abuse that could possibly be thrown at it in the process. I have been working 116 hour pay periods at a part time job so I've been a little out of it lately.

I ended up getting a Pelican 1450 case. I looked into Seahorse, and for a case of around the same dimensions, I would have been paying around the same if I wanted the foam with it.

It's a rather flexible type plastic that doesn't seem to get brittle with age or cold. Of course we're pretty careful with our gear underground, but we've even checked this stuff as luggage. We use it mostly as carry cases, but we've started actually using these as housings for some instruments and power packs. There are platforms around the interior, on the bottom and on the lid, for attaching mounting plates.

If your departure and arrival situation supports it, consider packing the knives with a firearm. By law, you can't use a TSA lock on the case and they are not allowed to open it once they have completed their acceptance inspection. Thefts of guns are far less frequent than other items. I'm not sure I would risk a valuable pistol with this scheme but a cheapo like a Lorcin or equivalent might be just the ticket.

That is a great idea.

+1. That's what I did!

Pretty common photographers trick. In fact all it needs to be is a starter pistol or a deactivated one. So no license hassle for you, but still declarable. Its also because theft of a weapon bumps up to the Fed level so its ATF looking into it, where everything else its an in-house investigation, so the perps would have a better idea of how to keep out of sight of people they know.
