I have noticed that some of my micarta handles have discoloured over time. What materials/techniques do you use for your knives? I see suggestions of old shirts, bubble wrap, cardboard, felt and stuff. Have you guys had any problems long term?

I searched this forum and noticed that a lot of you use tuff cloth or CLP. On some of my users I have discolouration on the handles from oils and stuff. Dont mind it on the users. I want to prevent this on the lighter coloured handles that I am going to store for awhile. I am worried that if I wrap them in plastic, cloth, paper or whatever that the wrapping will damage the handles over time.

I live in Hawaii, so moisture and salt air is a big problem here. And the answer is NO, I wont send them to you guys on the mainland for safe keeping...

I oiled my Force One handle to darken the micarta and I know that it I want it "Natural" again all I have to do is wash it. The scrubbing removes the oil and brings back the factory coloring on the Micarta. There is no good way to prevent it, but there is a way to clean it. I also live in a Salty air environment and while it plays havoc on my 01 and D2 knives, my INFI doesn't have that bad of a problem. The INFI when it starts to show rust can be hit with some CLP and wiped clean. The 01 and D2 stuff must be well greased, (XF7) because if it rusts, out comes the sandpaper. Unless you are Vacuum sealing your knives and keeping them in the safe, they will need some kind of care if you are using or storing them in less then perfect conditions.
