I am not going to Blade because my wife gave me a trip to Alaska starting Tuesday.

We will be in Fairbanks, Danali, Anchorage, Seward, Sitka, Juneau and KetchiKan.

The online Yellow Pages show Retail Cutlery stores in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau.

I would appreciate recommendations. I am particularly interested in quality local knives. I am not flying 3000+ miles to buy production knives I can probably get cheaper in the lower 48 nor am I interested in nonfunctional tourist knives that look pretty but don't cut.

I have bought several knives from Northern Knives on 5th Ave. in anchorage. They feature most major makers and several local craftsmen. Which hotel will you be staying while in Anchorage?

I hope you enjoy your trip. Are you on a organized tour? If so it is sometimes kind of hard to get away. Drop me a line and when you get here I will get you in touch with Richard Kacser who I think is the best maker here in the Fairbanks area. There is a shop a little north of Seward that is owned by a maker whose name has slipped my mind. Seeing Alaska takes a life time. I have lived here for 25 years and never plan to leave. I am an artist and I can refer you to the best galleries if that is your interest .You can call me at 907-456-3005. Here is a link to our downtown web cam. http://www.arcticcam.com/cam.html

We are travelling as part of a Holland America Land and Cruise Package.

I don't remember the hotel in Fairbanks without the itenerary in front of me but we arrive tomorrow evening around 7:30 pm.

We are scheduled to do a Gold Dredge tour on Wed but I hope that it will end early enough for shopping.

We take the train to Denali on Thur and arrive in Anchorage on Sat.

I know that we are in the Hilton in Anchorage so I don't know how far that is from Northern Knives.

I am very excited about the trip. I know that we will only be able to scratch the surface in 2 weeks but we are going to get as much in as we can.

I appreciate the tips.

I will ask for one more. My wife would like to find a fur lined leather coat in Fairbanks. Any suggestions on where to look?

I took a Holland Amercia Land Crusie package 3 years ago. You are in for a fabulous time. Went on the Rhyndham.

SDouglas,
Fairbanks is a cool little town. My sister went to school there and decided to stay there. I've been up to visit twice and want to move there. I found a knifemaker who owns The Cutting Edge (http://www.sharpenalaska.com) had lots of material for knife making. Also there is a Ivory shop in the center of town, the main gift shop area. Can't remember the name but you'll know it when you find it. Walking into the shop you'll see 2-3 full mammoth tusks drying. Ask him about ivory for knife scale, he should have some. Also go though his scrap. you should find some good mat'l. I've pulled some great stuff out.

Your going to have a great time. If you can when you in Fairbanks get to Chiena (sp) Hot Springs. I bit of a drive but worth it. Denali is a wicked cool place. Get in touch if you want need any info.

akivory, where is the knife maker your talking about? I'd love to meet knife people next time I come up, hopefully in September. I'd also be interseted in meeting you.

The trip was absolutely fantastic but we are still recovering from a wonderful vacation.

I had the pleasure of meeting Chuck an Richard for a brief time while in Fairbanks.

I now know why the Shopkeepers in Fairbanks refer to the Holland Hostages and Princess Prisoners. The Tour packages are good but they keep you on the run from early in the morning until late in the evening.

Did you stop here when you where in Anchorage?
Numerous local Knifemakers displayed!
