Does anyone know of anything that you can use for knife stropping besides leather? I am planning on getting leather strop but dont have the money right now. I have heard of cardboard newspaper, any of those work well or is there anything else that would work better?

Yes. You may want to search this one, a lot of reference material at your disposal. The items you mentioned will work quite well assuming the edge has been properly prepared.

A StropBlok by Knives Plus will last you a lifetime, comes highly recommended by many BF members (myself included) and only costs $20. http://www.knivesplus.com/KP-STROP8-STROPBLOCK.html

If you spend any money at all, invest it in a tube of polishing compound, like Flitz or Simichrome. Then, try it out on any of the other surfaces mentioned thus far. You can get a wide range of performance from one compound, when used on different backing materials. I'd recommend trying it on leather, wood, paper and cardboard, at least. Cheap leather can be bought in scraps at Tandy or Hobby Lobby (I got some balsa blocks there too).
