dear spyderco crew,
i got an idea for a new model. it may seem like an oddball choice, but welcome the "Spydie-Nel", or whatever fancy name one could come up with. thing is, i'm thinking of a Spyderco-Opinel hybrid kind of knife.
here's the basic idea: i always liked Opinel knives and similar thin-bladed full flat-ground knives with a carbon steel blade
here's some positive properties of an Opinel:
- good old carbon steel takes a razor edge within minutes with little effort
- carbon steel is flexible and rugged, sturdy tips, bent blades can be bent back, extreme slicing abilities with great ease
- edge-retention is surprisingly good
- strike a carbon blade against a stone and you get..., sparks! make fire easy
here's some minor negatives of an Opinel, imo:
- cumbersome two-handed blade opening
- annoying collar lock
- no clip
- no thumbhole or -studs for one-handed deployment
- no guard, grooves or ridges for safety
- too roundish slippery handle
here's my idea for an Opinel kind of Spyderco:
- thin and flexible full flat grind Opinel-style classic carbon-steel blade
- affordable, lightweight and properly balanced due to carbon blade
- 4" modified clip point blade (military) or leaf shaped blade (manix/dragonfly)
- 14/15mm spyderhole for one-handed opening/closing
- liner-, front- or frame-lock (though framelock is only possible if thick micarta would be used, like how Jens Anso does it for example, which could make the knife too heavy). liner-lock would be the bomb i guess
- ergonomic and safe handle with mild finger-ridges on spine and choil or ergo finger-cutouts
- classic style handle scales to match the knife-type (think micarta or wood for example)
- reversible tip-down/up clip
am i just nuts or could this be something?
personally i'd love to have one, i'd buy it in a heartbeat and never use my military again, really
really interested what Sal 'd think about this idea......
