One of my favorite modern folders for the last couple years is the VG-10 Calypso Jr.

I recently got to use a S30V Native. Now, I've always thought if the Caly Jr. had just a little more beef, it'd be even better. IMO if you were to take the slightly thicker Native handle with its great ergonomics - finger choils, grippier texture, tapered at rear - and marry it to a flat ground laurel leaf blade like the Caly Jr. but made out of a bit thicker VG-10 stock it'd be a fabulous folder. Add the thumb grooves from the Native and maybe the swedge ... hey, I'm ready to pre-order my Calypso III today!

Just feedback for the design process, I suppose .... and wishful thinking. :)

Actually, the Caly III is coming out later this year... It's basically a Manixed Calypso Jr; full SS liners, G-10, etc. Check out the Spyderco Forum, look for shots from the Amsterdam meet for a pic.

Thanks, BuckyCat. I did several searches (Calypso/III/Amsterdam/G10) and couldn't find the pictures or much information ..... except one post mentioned the Caly III having only a 2-5/8" inch edge.

Still think my Caly-Native hybrid would be great ..... but then, except for the Caly Jr. my taste in knives seems to be a lot different than most people.

Thanks again, Bucky. (Spyderco forum .... duh, I was searching BFC Spyderco forum :o )

In a perfect world, I'd like to see a lot of knives available in different handle options. Lots of materials I find personally just more appealing than FRN, but FRN has a couple advantages, like no real need for lubrication, and if well made they can be hell for strong. Plus with a $40-$50 knife, I don't mind loaning it so much .... or even giving it away, spur of the moment, if somebody comments on it and seems to need a better knife themselves.

Flat ground Native, that's really what my suggestion is. Got two signers on the petition already, let's see if we can get a groundswell :D

DoW, I think you're on to something with your idea. Maybe the factory fellows will pick up on it.

DOW - I like that Caly Jr very much.

If you want a larger Spyderco knife there are two made now that I highly recommend.

The Manix and the Military (carbon fiber if you can find one).

Here is a link to a review of large folders. The Manix kicked the Sebbies and Strider A@@'s big-time. Just goes to show you don't have to take out a second mortgage to get a really good knife.

I have asked the guy to do another review including the Military, and the Benchmade Rufus and Skirmish (named after two Irish WWII heroes???).

Thanks, guys. To me the ergonomics of the Native's handle seems like the logical evolution of the Caly Jr. handle. I know the CJ was never popular outside of blade enthusiast circles, but I think these changes and just a bit more heft might be a whole different story.

Manix and Paramilitary are very appealing designs, but I'm totally turned off of S30V. On the other hand the VG-10 in the CJ's I've had is easily the best stainless I've ever used.

Just so long as they don't call this new knife ..... the Caly-fornia Native ;)
