Knife suggestions for commuting to work with Police checkpoints

I had to bring my knives (that I was returning) to work with me today because I have no time except during work to make it to the post office. I had 3 knives ranging from 5"-9" in boxes, plus my Kershaw OSO Sweet in my coat pocket and a Leatherman Skeletool CX in my backpack. I'm not sure if everyone is aware, but in NYC, there are police checkpoints in the subway stations and the police have the right to randomly search people :jerkit: (especially with large bags/backpacks/packages). Knowing Murphy's Law, I made the prudent choice of taking a cab instead of the train. I know the police would not care why I had them on me. Mission accomplished, I then did the smart thing and bought another knife. ;) I pre-ordered the Perseverance and am open to any suggestions for my next purchase. I am ogling the Zero Tolerance but would like to know what everyone's thoughts are.

Thanks for reading.

Well, my first thought is not to live in NYC. I been there visiting, but I don't think I could live there. I understand those that have to, but his hillbilly will stick to the hills.

Second, would they rummage a locked case, say, a duralumin case or somthing that has a good lock on it?

I have a ZT350 heading my way, I hope to have it soon. From the one's I've held, I think they make some damn tuff folders, for sure.

Good luck with that whole, NYC thing, nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.:D:thumbup:

I live up in overly-expensive Westchester county. Hell, the train from White Plains gets me to GCT in like 35 mins, and I hate taking knives into NYC. The trick I found is to just designate one of my Vic Cadets as my "city knife." Don't mind if that one gets confiscated or if I have to ditch it. There sure is no place like NYC, but idk that I'd live there. I visit often enough to make up for it.

excellent post !! agreed I think I would carry an SAK, and if a cop would take a sak I'd move for sure.. violation of your rights that's for sure, if we all stood up and expressed our rights altogether we'd have vermont in the USA..

My girl and I did the touristy thing a few summers back (she's from outside of Philly. Psh.. city my ass :D) and I had to ditch a Cadet in the trash can at Battery Park. Metal detectors and security all had guns. What was I gonna do? Can-open-ify lady liberty's sandals? haha

The police state isn't in overdrive here yet. I'd carry something inexpensive but decent quality. a columbia river folder maybe. Gerber possibly.

my regular time in nyc definitely influences my choices, tho discrete carry IS legal.
there is a serious chilling effect in that town.

good work getting home, neighbor.

When the cops stop you here and ask if you've got a gun in the car, if you say no they try to loan you one.

do they have an actual RIGHT to search you in NYC? or do they say they do?

or is it random searches in exchange to get on the train THAT time?

in some locale, if they ask to search you, it's a request, only. they cannot search you, without further probable cause, or arrest, ... so you can say "no", and leave the train area, and walk or take a cab. heck, goto another station. chances are they won't bug you again.

remember your rights!

It's random searches in exchange to get on the train. If however you get picked for a random search and then decline the search by choosing not to get on the train well... you're up the creek without a paddle. Basically by stepping into the subway station you're in a police state.

the police have the right to randomly search people

The Fourth Amendment says they don't but New Yorkers seem to have ceded their personal freedoms to their elected officials. I'd move somewhere where people choose to remain free.

To your question though - you want something completely concealed - no clip showing etc. Maybe a thin profile SAK or something would be best because it's hard to detect and if it is detected, looks less scary than other options.
