I am looking for suggestions for a camp/BOB knife for me and my wife. I have prepared BOB's for my family of five and I am now looking for knives for the BOB's as well as a general camp knife for boy scout trips with my son. I have attached a Strider MK1A to my BOB but I am looking for suggestions of other quality knives for me and my wife for BOB and camping.

I have been looking at Randall 5" knives as well as Chris Reeve knives. Any suggestions for specific knives? Thanks,

shane

Don't get too spendy on blades for people that may not appreciate your finer tastes. Go with one of the Beckers, and they'll have good solid blades without a major cash outlay...better yet, get them some judiciously chosen SAKs and they'll be able to do even more..

I agree with everything numberthree said. Beckers are outstanding knives for the money and are well suited to this sort of use. Look at the Crewman (BK10), the Combat/Utility (BK7), and the Combat Bowie (BK9) and pick whichever size seems most appropriate.

Then buy medium-sized SAKs for everyone. The Huntsman or Farmer are the classic choices, but there are a huge number of options that allow you to optimize for your intended purposes. You can use the SAK Selector to help pick out models based on the features you want. I highly recommend models that include a wood saw.

With a good fixed blade and a SAK you can cover an amazing variety of needs.

I guess if you want to pick nits this isn't a knife, but it has a knife blade so I'm going to squeek it in. I would recommend a Leatherman Wave or Original. At least one for the family. It's amazing how often you use a pair of needle nose pliers once you have one with you all the time!

Folders:
Victorinox Rucksack/Forester/Trekker -- large with locking blade and saw, et al

Doug Ritter RSK Mk1 Folding Knife Upgraded blade profile and blade steel from the standard Benchmade Griptilian.

Spyderco Manix Lockback (note, I don't own but it's on my want list)

Fixed blades:
Bark River Northstar Excellent reviews, knife designed with Bushcraft in mind.

BK7 Becker Combat/Utility Knife Solid knife, good steel great $$ value

Consider a kit with a BK7 and a Victorinox Trekker in the pocket on the BK-7's sheath -- just a thought.

Knives are a personal choice and after throwing out links to a few of our favorite knives, it really comes down to your skill set, the nature of your BOB, and what you and your wife feel comfortable using.

Just thought about what i said before and i wanted to say not to get the sog or any other fixed blade because it would be more usefull if you get a leatherman or SAK. A month ago i thought about getting a seal revolver but i thought about it and got a leatherman charge Ti since it had many more things.

Look at the Onterio line of knives. The Rat-7 and TAK -1 are both great knives and you can't beat the price. I agree with these guys about the SAK or leatherman as well. I carry a SOG power lock everyday along with my CRKT Prowler. Also the Becker line of knives are tough to beat but those handles are a tad bit thick for smaller hands.

Hey Guys..

all good suggestions....

One thing you guys forgot though are Moras..For $100.00 you can get 8-10 of them, depending on which ones you get...

I'm a recent convert to Moras and they are Excellent value for the money...

As I have recently learned, the term Mora covers a lot of different knives, some might be good, some have awful ergonomics. Some are inexpensive, but if the knife isn't that good, are you being penny wise, pound foolish?

Which specific Mora would you recommend? A link would be nice.

Hey Ras..

As #3 already said..

Frosts Clipper, SWAK Erikksonns M2K, eithers red handled Moras..
All but the M2K can be had for $12 and under...The M2K is about $22-25USD

Well worth the money at twice the price...

As far as ergonomics are concerned..
The red handled wooden ones are about the only ones I don't find comfy....
Their plastic handles are nice..

All are razor sharp and eaily resharpened to scary sharp...

Look around,, they are easily found,,inexpensive as hell,, and most if not all get Wicked gas mileage...

The only thing that sucks are the sheaths..
Guess I have to say that..:)
