Knife suggestions for my Dad

So I would like to purchase a new folding knife for my dad, and was hoping forum members would be able to provide some suggestions as I have only been able to find 1 example that fits my parameters. He uses knives for a myriad of everyday tasks, yard work, cutting fishing line, opening packages, etc. Every few months he will give me a completely dull, dirty, and gunked up blade to clean and sharpen (which i suspect he thoroughly enjoys doing as he knows it makes me cringe every time). So he is NOT a knife guy, but for whatever reason I think he may like something a little nicer (almost anything would be an improvement), that fits the following parameters:

- 2 3/4 inch blade length maximum
- locking blade (preferably lock back style)
- USA made
- lightweight and thin-ish width

As a point of reference i lent him my Spyderco Gayle Bradley once and he was frustrated by the liner lock and thought it was way too big for a "pocket" knife. The only knife i have found so far that fits is the Buck Prince, which i am happy to buy for him, but was wanting to know what else might be out there. Lets say less than $100.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

I put a Spyderco Persistence to work for quite a while, for $100 you could buy him a couple. The liner lock is much easier to disengage than the GB. Just my .02

Buck 271 Alpha Dorado S30V steel?
Has "Buck USA" etched on the 2 1/2" blade. Should exceed requirements.

The Buck 501 is a safe bet.

Another to look at in the same vein only nicer (and maybe just a bit thicker) is the GEC 72, which is available in a dizzying array of scales and blade types.

Get him a Boye cobalt folder at $125 (www.boyeknives.com). Made in America. Will never rust. Cuts even when dull. Light weight thin blade, a real cutter. Designed and built by a master knifemaker (David Boye) and stand-up guy. He "wrote the book" on knifemaking.

Whatever you give your dad he'll love because its a gift from his son. Sounds like he might like something more traditonal with some modern upgrades like a case trapperlock or kershaw double cross.

Thanks mrynecy, both of those look great! I think he would really like the kershaw, he might even clean that one on from time to time:)

wow, the sky is the limit on this one. If he's not a knife guy then anything close to the 100$ range will satisfy him. Kershaw Skyline, any case some bucks, I would even check out a rat 1 (if he hates it you get a nice gift for yourself with money left over!!!) A bear msg stockman with stag horn, or anything along those lines. good luck.

Thanks sigsoup, the bear stockman looks like it would absolutely fit the bill. It might be that the reason i am having trouble is I am more a "modern" single blade type guy with almost no knowledge of traditional's and he is, well, more "traditional". May be why he doesn't want to really use any of mine. This gift is going to be a surprise, a "survived cancer twice" gift, so i am trying to knock it out if the park. Really want to get him something nice that he will use and try to share my knife obsession with him.

Thanks Hawh45, i have a bunch of benchmade's but have not picked up a sequel, my local dealer has one I will check it out thanks to your recommendation. I think they also have a BM Shori, thought that also might fit the bill. Way more expensive than in my original post but not an issue if he would really like it.
