Knife talk wanted...

I have been debating a few things and would like to air my thoughts and invite a little debate...

I feel that a small fixed blade is the best knife for a "defensive" knife because of the issue of concealment, comfort, and readiness. To this end, I carry a Pukulan knife from Keen Edge Knives (recently bought and VERY good for its intended purpose) or a Greco Companion (still waiting on a better concealment sheath for it, though, but it's coming). I have, until recently, carried a folder for utility and defense. I continue to carry the folder but no longer feel that it is really suited for my protection because of the difficulty that might come about in opening it if I happened to be rolling around on the ground with someone on top of me. I feel completely comfortable with either of the knives that I mentioned in this role as long as a sufficiently comfortable and accessible concealment sheath is used.

For all-around utility, the folder that I carry (Benchmade AFCK) has sufficed and will continue to do so.

The Greco Companion is hard to beat for outdoor chores and utility. It is thick, comfortable, and cheap (so I don't mind abusing it). I can't think of any other knife that could really beat it in the role of a small, fixed blade utility tool.

As you can see, I'm pretty well set on the smaller blades. Where I am having trouble deciding is the larger blades. I am "optimizing" my gun and knife inventories to keep the best one or two in each role and have reached the bottom of the list (knives) and need to "whittle down" (no pun intended) my knife selection. It is becoming apparent to me as I mull it over that I need to get rid of all of them and replace them with other choices.

I can barely think of any real use for a medium sized (or what I consider medium) blade...one from 6" to 8" or so in length. My thought is that this is a compromise length, neither the best for bigger tasks or smaller ones but convenient to carry in the field and use instead of carrying a big knife and a small one.

I feel that a full-tang blade is best for general use and intend to go with this.

I have no real upper price range but would like to stay as cheap as possible because, after all, it is a tool to be used and abused and not a collector's item that I'm after...BUT I don't mind paying for quality.

Anyone have any suggestions for me?

I would take a look a the Battle Mistress from Busse Combat. This is a very rugged knife with a 9.5 inch blade. It isn't cheap, but I think is well worth the price being asked for it.
