I've seen some people have small teathers on their knives and was woundering what they have these for. Is it mainly for pocket carry or for both pocket carry and clip carried knives? I clip all my knives on the inside of my front right pocket, But have occasionally droped them down in my pocket when in a hurry.

By 'tether' I assume you mean a 'lanyard'. Lanyards are for decoration and utility. They can help with your grip, aid in pulling out of a deep pocket, and they can look nice too. I've posted some pics of some of mine on the Spyderco forum(Stormdrane)::cool:

Some people do actually tether their knife to a belt or belt loop to prevent losing it. Usually it is attached by quick disconnect mechanism.

Victorinox sells belt loops and quick disconnect items. Their knives do not have pocket clips.

You'd probably be better served by just making them yourself. With a quick serch of the net, and a little time, you could have it done. Plus you would have learned a new skill.

A lanyard is a strap that secures the object to you. A tassel, like the many used on military swords and knives, are decorative items of uniformed dress. I am not sure which you are asking about, but lanyards should be used with care. If you drop an open knife, the last thing you would want is to have it pulled or spring back towards you. The only time I recall using one was on a dive or fishing knife; and the later was safely attached to the boat rather then myself.

I've founds lanyards to be about as useful as tits on a boar hog except when working over water or in the case of a machete or large knife that your swinging vigorously to clear brush. Now I have actually "tethered" or "dummy corded" knives to my gear in certain evolutions where a lot of crawling/climbing/running was necessary, more than a few times I've looked back to see a knife or other piece of kit dragging behind me on a dummy cord (I had the good fortune to see someone else do it w/ an M-9 beretta). Day to day though I don't think its really necessary, and probably a much bigger pain in the a$$ than it's worth.

I believe that some people also use them as an easy way to keep a nice 10' (a number I've seen mentioned, anyway) length of paracord (what a lot of lanyards are made of) around for survival or other assorted unexpected needs.

I found a site that sells them for $5.00 each in a couple of colors if anyones intrested.

Heres the product.
