I know alot of people hate what CS did for the knife enthusiast by producing such a violent torture test video, but I think it is a good idea and I would like to see other knife companies do the same, but make it more informative instead of impressive. Make the video free to the public, "knife law maker" friendly, informative (lock strengh info, blade steel, general toughness or utillity of the product, Pros and Cons, ect.),not repetative, although, if it has knives in it, I won't get bored, and not so scary to sheeple or people who make knife laws (in case you didn't understand what a "knife law maker" is). Who else aggrees? Maybe someone from one of the knife companies will see this and let me know how they feel about it. By the way, I like Cold Steel knives, and don't know why people make such a fuss about LT "stealing" ideas from other companies, as long as he puts out a good product at a descent price, I will buy it, unless he murders Ernie Emerson, C.J. Buck, Chris Reeve, ect. for a knife idea. Not trying to start an argument (I know how touchy some people are about CS), just expressing my oppinion.
P.S. how cool would it be, to see Victorinox show some uses for those "what do I use this for" kind of tools like the hook or reamer with sewing eye?

This is why I love the Cold Steel proof vids...their knives and I love seeing them in action, I agreee that the video is a bit "over the top" but I too would love to see videos like these from other companies, even if they don't have these extreme tests involved, I would still like to see some stats if you will...I agree with you 100% but the only thing you won't ever see is cons on a knife advertisement...I don't think a knife company will ever show why their products isn't the best no matter how small the problem is...

I mainly disliked the cold steel videos because they were uninformative. Some of their lock strength vides were OK but they certainly do not have the strongest lock out their. Furthermore, their durabilty and steel info is very biased. In their defense however, what company wouldn't be biased?

With that being said I think CS could have been a bit more honest. What they stated was too vague. In a previous post it was mentioned that they didnt display Torque on their locks, when they rave about these locks I'd like to see some real numbers.

Generaly speaking I think most companies would be biased.Cliff Stamp does a number of grueling test on knives that are much less biased, if you're interested. Many members of the forum review knives and I find these to be very informative, my only complaint is that there isn't a review for every knife.

Not a video, but still an example of "proof"

A video isn't necessarily the last word in performance testing. That'd be like saying everything you see on TV, infomercials, or from Hollywood is true. In fact, Cold Steel's warranty won't cover damaged caused by using their knives the way they do on their videos.

That is why the internet is the best medium of information, with self-appointed testers/reviewers and with places like Bladeforums being gold mines of information.

Fikes has a blade testing video, Trident Knives has some video clips as did Busse Combat. There are dozens of them in the HI forum.

That would be nice to see some videos of knives used in tasks that have something to do with reality. A hunting knife skinning, an outdoor knife being used to build a shelter or cook a meal.

I know that I want a Cold Steel with me if I'm ever attacked by a rouge cardboard silouette or an out of control buick hood.

I believe there's no doubt but what the Cold Steel guys really like their own knives. Those knives don't have to have the best locks and best steel, but I do like to get a feel for whether a knife is strong and reliable and I think that comes across in their video. I think many other knives would be able to make many of the cuts the CS knives make, but the rest is show biz.

I have mixed feelings about it. While the entertainment value of some of the stunts in these videos is somewhat amusing I think the general consensus is, at least around here that those videos are actually a bad thing. In a way all that cutting up of the meat and stabbing things, is some bad press for not just the companies in this industry that make knives but for the end line users as well. It is not good to scare the sheeple and besides we all know what that write up in the Wal Street Journal did for knives using stuff like those videos against cutlery companies.

Today on the Buck forum there is a post about a Buck knife used in an add repeatedly on TV about murders or something and the bad press it probably unfairly directs at Buck. The question was asked if that knife was like the one used in all these attacks I think. I'll have to read it again. I doubt there is any ryhme or reason to why they chose that knife or Buck and probably didn't think about it but companies and those of us that love knives or make them are more sensitive to that kind of bad publicity these days.

Cold Steel doesn't seem to mind negative publicity though so stick one of their knives in that pic for everyone and they can't say much since they already have them out there in worse videos and pictures everywhere. I mean they seem to have adopted the "Madona" philosophy about it. "Any publicity is good publicity especially when its free."

Thats my opinion anyway.

Can I get an AMEN.

Ah I was wondering why ive seen negative opinions of Cold Steel knives, I love the OSS- any1 know of a company that makes almost exactly the samething (only better ?)

I like what BJE said in the opening comment about other knife companies demonstrating their products for what they're designed to be used for. I honestly don't care about stabbing through barrels or doors or prying heavy things apart - those are not reasons why I carry a pocket knife. I think it would be interesting to see a SAK in action and see just how much torque it can handle, how big of a limb the saw can cut, etc. The same is true for multi-tools. All too often I see a feature or two that I "just gotta have" and drop $50 or more on another multi-tool and find out that it's not much different or better than the other shoebox full of MT's I already have.
