Well after completing my knife throwing wall to use on stage with an assistant I just ran across this little gem in the Washington state lawbooks.

RCW9.41.260 Dangerous exhibitions
Every proprietor, lessee, or occupant of any place of amusement, or any plat of ground or building, who allows it to be used for the exhibition of skill in throwing any sharp instrument or in shooting any bow gun or firearm of any description, at or toward any human being, is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable under chapter 9A.20 RCW.

Now I'm wondering for myself when I go on tour this summer and for a friend who is bringing in an out of country performer for the state of Oregon, are there any laws on the books in regards to knife throwing with an assistant?

The Revised Code of Washington has some important distinctions to consider. First, it's scope applies to the owner if the stage/park/building, not you as the knife thrower. Second, it only refers to situations where you are throwing sharp "live steel" at another human being. It has no effect on throwing without a human at the target end, and also does not affect the varying tricks employed by knife throwers that make it only appear that they are throwing at the person (sorry to pop anyone's bubble). Granted, a venue owner may not know about this law, or they may know about it and have a completely wrong idea what it means. The latter could still make getting a venue difficult.

I was unable to find any similar statute for the state of Oregon. There are general laws on concealed carry of knives, but they only apply to concealed carry on one's person. http://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/166.240

Keep in mind that some county ordinances may exist about throwing knives, but I'm not aware of any. I would have to check county by county and that's not something I have time to do.

Ok, thanks for letting me know.

I don't use any of the trick/magic apparatus setups to use, so it involves me throwing AROUND my assistant. (You throw at an assistant, it's assault, you throw around, it's a show!)

I'm helping a friend out who's bringing in a performer to Portland and needed to know the laws.
