Knife to pass on to your son?

Do you guys have one specific knife that you plan on passing on to your son or relative? For me, such a knife would have to be of practical size (3" - 6.5") and have a timeless design with handle materials that are durable and will stand up to aging. Probably a fixed blade too, since folders will eventually wear out much faster than a solid piece of steel.

The knife i plan on passing to my son is a Swamprat M6. It has a great, timeless design, great steel, micarta handles that will last, and is the one i actually use. Couple all of that with the fact that Swamprats and other Busse-kin knives are fairly unique and harder to get than most other knives, i think it's something a son might appreciate. (My only gripe is that the blade is a tad thick. An M6 at .18" thickness would be my perfect knife.)

I would think a RAT RC6 would be a great knife to pass along as well, but it's not as unique or exclusive as a Busse-kin. What are your pass down picks?

A Buck 110 (generic answer).

I'd hand down one of my framelocked CQC7's

Id pass down something that I use. My bravo 1 would be nice, or my fiddleback ladyfinger

During my search for my first knife, the idea that I would be passing it down to my son played a BIG factor. After signing up to this forum and doing a little research, i eventually landed on the Fallkniven F1 3G. Needless to say, I couldn't be happier. The principles and responsibilities of a knife are well placed in the design of the F1. It does not look too menacing that a young man would look at it like a weapon instead of a tool. It is for me the best well rounded knife in all aspects. Not to mention, I have no doubt that it will far outlast me thanks to the composition of the steel. Hope this helps.

no kids yet but soon. My kid's first knife will be a mora with full hilt, after he has learned some lesson's and possibly lost one (with appropriate lectures on mistakes)

eventually the solingen buffalo hunter in stag my dad carried for 30+years on 4 deer and a moose a year.

I have a few customs that match. Mastodon Ivory scales. All of them serve different purposes.
My Bark River Bravo-1 and Canadian Special and Golok as users along with piggy back knives for the main knives
Chris Reeves Mnandi, which also has Mastodon Ivory scales, as a gentleman folder along with a few more.

My son will get a few knives but the one that sticks out in my mind is the Izula. I have a new one saved for him. It meets your criteria of being a fixed blade yet is perfect for every day use. He's only 2 1/2 right now but he already loves to wear it around his neck. There will be bigger and more expensive knives but I doubt he'll get more use out of any of them than he will the Izula.

My son will get all of my knives eventually. Not only mine, but my father's as well. Little dude stands to inherit a heap of steel someday! He's gonna have more guns than he knows what to do with, too.

As for a specific knife, I bought a Busse Jackhammer for him right before he was born. I wanted to be able to give him what I considered the state of the art "fighting knife" at the time of his birth. It's in the safe, waiting for him, and will be his on his 18th birthday, new & unused.

That won't be his first knife though, I'm sure. As soon as my wife and I feel he's mature and responsible enough to handle it, he will be welcome to any of my knives he wants, as long as I don't buy him something special for the occasion (which I probably will). What's mine is his. He won't be getting a knife anytime soon though- his Nerf sword will have to suffice for the time being- he's a terror with a section of Hot-Wheels track.

If I ever have kids (need to find that right woman)... They will get my new Umnumzaan. Just got her this weekend (friend paid half of the asking price).

And in the meantime, I will gift a couple of my other blades. No need ot have as many as i do, and this Umnum will let some of my other friend enjoy some nice sharp steel.

I bought a set of BHK Bushcrafter/Baby Bushcrafter that is for my son. He will inherit my set.............someday.

Doc

The knife people value most will be the one they associate with you (AKA, your favorite EDC), and mostly after you're dead.:foot:

I would think it would depend on if they were a knife person or not. ;)

My long gone Dad's old WWII KaBar!

Merry Christmas!

Stainz

PS I buy my older son all kinds of knives now!

The KID gets all Dad's toys. :)
I already gave him his own Leu Kozuka, Black over Green.

My Son is turning 40, and has knives of his own. A number of his better ones came out of my collection.

I am having two identical knives made by a fellow that I have bought from before. The handles will be different color, but other than that they are 'father and son' knives. The knife design is a camper/bushcraft shape, the steel is A2.

I am hoping my laddie really likes the design I came up with, and the workmanship of my friend as he crafts these knives.

I guess I am saying that you can find a quality maker here, that will produce a memorable knife of high quality and fair price.

I would try to make sure his knife was an SAK. My dad gave me his Wenger commander (which he got in 1986) when I turned 16. I will probably give my son that same knife.

my three year old whoops my @$$ with the nerf sword, for christmas he's getting their new broadsword, i'm pretty psyched to play with it too lol.

If I would have son, I would pass him my first SAK ( Spartan ) and my carbon steel puukko once he would shown proof he knows how to handle dangerous things and has senses... if I would have daughter I would pass her a good SAK and tell her to keep one good SAK with her all the time...

The only other knife nut in my family is my daughter. My
son has a nominal interest, as he carries a Spyderco Native I gave him. My daughter, on the other hand, has a decent Busse collection as well as ten or so other knives. Her EDC is usually an Al Mar Nomad or a Camilus Heat.

My present wishes are that my son be given a chance to select a few knives from my Busse Collection, and the daughter will get the bulk of them.

I have bought a stag-handled Scout Knife from A.G. Russell and put it away for my five year old grandson. Got to get something for the three year old granddaughter also.
