Later this summer I'm flying from LA to Dallas, then driving up Route 35 to Kansas, then east on Route 70 into KC, and flying back home to CA.

My questions:

--any particularly good knife shops to cehck out along the way?

--any knives I can get there I can't get at home?

--if I pack them in checked luggae, should I have any problem getting back to California?

My thanks.

Not sure, but I think in TX there is a restriction against knives over 5- or 5.5-in long. Also, I think AOs are now considered switchblades, or was TX the state that decided against that stupid law? If it did pass, I don't know when it goes into effect.

No, the opposite is true - the TX supreme court recently ruled that assisted opening knives are in the same category as switchblades and therefore illegal. And that judgment was a clarification of an existing law, so there's no "grace period" or anything like that - As of the date of that ruling, assisted openers are illegal in Texas. And the blade length limit here is 5.5" (presumably only for knives being carried on one's person) - but I would assume that if you were on a hunting trip and had a 6" hunting knife on you, for example, you wouldn't catch grief.

There is a knife store in Ft. Worth (about 25 miles from DFW airport) called House Of Blades that is absolutely worth a visit. It's one of the biggest knife stores in the USA, and has a 50,000 knife inventory with just about every knife brand you can think of. They also have a good sized selection of customs, vintage, and discontinued knives as well. You can easily spend 2-3 hrs. just browsing the knives.

Yes,House of Blades is cool. They have everything from rare antiques to the latest greatest. They let you handle the merch too which is always nice.Only drawback is if you buy,you will pay full retail.Occasionally i find a bargain they have traded on ,but it's a rare thing. They are northwest side Ft.Worth, right on the loop.
