All,

Do you think that there are knife types that "every collector needs one of those"? And if yes, which ones? E.g.,

Everyone needs at least one...
- Bowie,
- Art dagger,
- Upscale hunter,
- D-guard bowie,
- Sword,
- Japanese-style knife or sword,
- Fantasy knife,
- Hunter,
- Chute knife,
- Traditional pattern slipjoint,
- Fancy folder,
- Tactical folder,
- Tactical FB,
- ....

What do you think? Silly concept or valid? What to add to this list without making it unmanageably big?

Joss,
I think your list is valid, might want to include an S-guard Bowie.

No disrespect to Joss, I think too much of his opinions and in awe of his collection, but my passion is folders, slipjoints, lockbacks, liner locks, customs, and a lot of production, as time as gone by, 40+ years, my taste have changed some. But it has always been in the folding knife line, I do not feel a need or desire to own any of the others. No offense taken and none given to any poster above, but it is my collection and what I like to collect.

My tastes run to folders also as I can actually carry them where I could not carry a 15 1/2" Bowie! Doesn't mean I'm not going to get a bowie, because I have one, all 15 1/2" of it, coming at the end of the month from Ray Laconico. Even though folders have always been my area of focus, I think that if you are collecting, not necessarily to use although you could, that a bowie would be the one essential knife to have.

I'd go with kitchen knife and leave it at that. No Nihon-to for me unless they're for the cutting board, thank you.

I don't believe that every collector NEEDS one of any type of knife. If you just collect daggers you wouldn't need a bowie,or vice versa.I don't believe there is any criteria to types of knives folks need to collect at all.Nothing wrong with specializing,or having a little of all of em.

No disrespect to the premise here, every question is fun in this forum, but with as many collectors as there are, I think it may be an extreme notion to feel that any collector at all needs one of anything more than what he or she so desires. Many, many collectors specialize, some wishing to collect in true specialty fashion. Without the diversity of collectors, where would we be?

I am also more into folders, custom folders. I carry and use my folders. Yes, I DO own and love several custom fixed blades. And yes, there are many fixed blade knives that I DO want!! But, I will always own MORE folders than fixed baldes.

Every collector needs (has?) a crappy Pakistani or Chinese knife. Once you see, feel, and understand the differences, EVERY quality handmade knife is a welcome addition.

Every collector needs a knife that makes them smile when they reflect on it's history. Usually involves a person or two. Could be any of the above.

I am surprised that tactical knives had to be an afterthough. C'mon!!!!

Added tacticals. Having 4 of J W Smith's, it's funny I didn't think about them.

You mean I don't have to get one (or two) of everything?

People need to collect the type of knives they love - the knives that inspire them - nothing more.

Roger

I was asked by a collector How many drop point hunters does one need?? My reply is just one more (of any style that catches the eye) esp if it's one of mine.

Not that the list is invalid, but I think that a perfect collector's array of knives is whatever knives that the collector likes to collect. I think not having a certain type of knife in a collection definitely does not invalidate their collection.

yep, silly concept :). however, in case of emergency your knife collection may serve to safe your and your family's life. so it might be a good idea to have at least a camp knife, a drop point hunter and a traditional slip joint (the latter for style).

best regards,
hans
