Cpl. Samuel Toloza of El Salvador (news - web sites)'s Cuscatlan Battalion displays his bloodstained knife that he used to fend off Iraqi gunmen in Najaf, Iraq (news - web sites), Saturday May 1, 2004. One of his friends was dead, 12 others lay wounded and four soldiers still left were surrounded and out of ammunition, so Toloza used his switchblade knife to charge the Iraqi gunmen. Thanks Spoonrobot. I think this guy is a hero and it wouldn't have been possible without his knife. I wonder why no one else has postedon this. I think it'd be great tidings for a bladeforum.

From the Washington Times article cited above:

"We never considered surrender. I was trained to fight until the end," said the 25-year-old Toloza, one of 380 El Salvador soldiers whose heroism is being cited...

"My immediate reaction was that I had to defend my friend, and the only thing I had in my hands was a knife," Toloza said.

Secretary of State Colin Powell said recently the Central American unit has "gained a fantastic reputation among the coalition"...

Phil Kosnett, who heads the Coalition Provisional Authority in this holy Shiite city, says he owes his life to Salvadorans who repelled a well-executed insurgent attack on his three-car convoy in March. He's nominated six of them for the U.S. Army's Bronze Star medal.

bad ass, but you know that pic won't go over too well with the sheeple. Screw em.

Thank for posting this guys, great information. Very interesting article. I am courious what the TV news will have to say about the incident.

Been watching CNN on and off during the day, no mention of this incident that I've seen. But Personally I am happy to see a good guy, having used a knife as a weapon, and being successful to the point of saving lives, including his own. Been a loooong time since I was in the Military, but I bet this guy had the basic slash/stab sort of training we got. Funny, I used the word weapon, being that he is military it is also one of his tools. Hope he dont get in trouble for having a "non issue" item...but with red tape regs even in the miitary, you never know.....

salvadorans are good people/soldiers imho, the knife looks almost like a crawford kasper to me,

"TAKING A KNIFE TO A GUNFIGHT; SOMETIMES A GOOD IDEA"

Following is an account from May 2004 Soldier of Fortune, Chariots of Fire - Part 5, by Sgt. 1st/Class D. J. Johnson, Crazy Horse Troop, 3/7 Cav., commanding a M3 Bradley, just outside Bagdad.

He had dismounteed from his unit, carrying an AK-47, to check 2 dead Iraqi soldiers for documents. The following is in his words:

"The first guy had an M1911 .45 pistol on him. I lay down my AK and picked up the.45 to check if it was loaded and it was -- what a nice find. Then I saw a guy stepping out from behind some wood piled up on the floor: He had an AK-47, but I got the drop on him. I pulled the trigger. The hammer fell, and nothing happened. We looked at each other. I hit him in the face with the pistol and he dropped his AK. I pulled out the faithful Buck hunting knife I had carried turkey and deer hunting in Kentucky, and all through Desert Storm, and stuck him under his arm and in the chest to get him off me. He fell up against the wall and died there -- like so many other Iraqi soldiers who could have surrendered -- for nothing."
