Hrmmm..... what prevents someone from shaking the machine to get the knife out? I've seen it happen to chocolate bars, while I have better thing to do than steal candy from a vending machine, it is awfully tempting to steal Benchmades from a vending machine...

Sounds like a bad idea to me. First of all, I wouldn't want to pay in advance for a knife I couldn't hold in my own hands and inspect (true, I have used mail order, but only when there's a good return policy). Secondly, it sounds like only a matter of time before some punk kid buys one and carves his initials into every bench and table in the mall or worse, creating more bad feelings among the ever-growing herd of sheeple.

Just about every knife I have ever purchased, I never held first! Even spending mega dollars on customs, I never held or seen them ahead of time either other than from pics and reviews! So far I have been happy, especially lately. So, a vending machine would be a okay with me!

I was in the vending business a while back, and there's a vending machine for just about anything, from Earth Worms to Jokes. The last year I remeber the numbers for was something like $26 billion was put into vending machines, in the same year only $4 billion was spent on Shampoo. It's huge.

And remember, some of that shampoo was sold through vending machines.

I suspect that the kinds of knives sold via vending machines are likely to be the sort of thing that one does not need to inspect. Most vending machines sell stuff in $1-$5 range. Maybe they could up it to $20. Even at $20, you know know the knife is a POS, there's no need to confirm that before committing to the deal.

The possibility exists, however unlikely.

Consider this - many of the knife manufacturers out there offer some of their products in "clam packs" - that is, clamshell plastic packaging.

For example, the CRKT K.I.S.S and P.E.C.K. models are available this way. So is the Spyderco Spydercard. And the Leatherman Micra. I'm sure there are some others as well. Failing that, there's always the good old adhesive backed hanger.

Could I see a vending machine filled with KISSes, PECKs, SpyderCards, Micra's, Benchmade TORK kits, etc? Sure.

Is it likely to happen? Probably not, since the initial cost of the vending machine is steep, it'd have to take credit cards, and the only buyers would probably be sporting good stores.

Still, it's nice to dream...
