I don't know if this is a good idea or not but I was thinking it would be cool to pick two knives that have these criteria in common:
- Price within $20
- Similar size, weight, use etc.
- Maybe from two different companies (I don't know if this is necessary or not, let me know what you think)

Then create a poll and let the people decide which of these two knives is better.

So, to start it off, I will use the kershaw leek and spyderco tenacious, two entry level, budget knives.

Let me know what other face-offs you would be interested in seeing (griptillian vs PM2 maybe, or Kershaw Blur vs Spyderco delica, or maybe even a SAK or other multitool) or tell me that this is not a good idea ;)

That's a tough call. I like the blade shape and SpyderHole of the Tenacious, but have a strong dislike of liner locks and black 'plastic' slab handles.
On the Leek, I love the handle ergonomics and think the opening mechanism is cool. I prefer a frame lock over a liner, but it's still not ideal. The blade isn't my preference either, no belly and too sharp of a tip.

Overall though, if I have to pick one, I say the Kershaw. It's just more attractive.

So, are people liking this kind of thread? I know people are always comparing knives and I though it would be cool to have just hard stats on how many people like one knife over the other.

Tenacious would be my pick. I like the size and ergonomics of the leek but I'm not a very big fan of assisted opening knives so I'd have to go with the tenacious.

Leek, hands down. Now if you were to put it up against a Delica, that's a much tougher call.

My vote goes to the Kershaw Leek. It will work in a medical office. The Spyderco just would not fly.

Maybe Tenacious and Blur would have been closer. The Leek and Tenacious are very different.

I have the Leek, but I had to vote Tenacious. It's a bigger, tougher, more versatile blade. The Leek has a cool form factor and design, but it's pretty much a light duty blade. The tenacious is more versatile. But if I'm going to cut out a splinter I want the Leek!

Well spoken sir... +1

They're so different I don't think it's fair to say which one is better.

The Leek would do horribly as a bushcraft knife but the Tenacious may do pretty well. Likewise the Tenacious would make a rather odd gent's knife but the Leek would do admirably.

Also wait, both within $20? I don't think you could find either of these for less than $30...on Ebay at least

I come up with retail prices of $40-ish for either knife. About $2 difference between the two knives.

Knife Smackdown! Love the idea OP

Announcer: "In the left corner we have the Chinese-Made Tenacious and in the right corner we have the USA-Made Leek"
Tenacious: "Your tiny blade's so useless for batoning"
Leek: "At least I'm not made of alphabet steel"
Tenacious: "You take that back!"
Crowd Roars
Leek: "Assisted means I'm quicker"
Tenacious "Yeah if you want to rely on small springs"
Tenacious: Spyder-Hole, Spyder-Hole!
Crowd Roars
Announcer: "Remember folks, both these knives cost around $35"

Winner: Leek, because not having any choil means bleeding fingers (the main reason I never considered the Tenacious)

OP, the next Smackdown! should be the Griptilian against the Manix 2:D

I think both are great knives but very different. I voted based on which I carry more and that goes to the Leek. I might carry my Tenacious more if I didn't have PM2, Manix 2, Military, Sebenza, ETC. I still carry my Leeks as they make great backup/SubEDC knife.

I'm a huge spyderco fan, but one of my most carried and enjoyed every day knife is my leek composite. Its just a fantastic knife.

Depends on what medical office. ;)

I prefer the Tenacious for the ergos and grind. I may just be unlucky, but the Leeks I've had were quite thick behind the edge.

I've yet to see a Tenacious or Leek sell for around $20 anywhere, unless you're talking about them being sold as used. And even then, they're so different from each other that I just can't see how they would compare. I think a better comparison would be a Kershaw Leek and a CRKT Eros SS.

I guess I didn't clarify. I mean two knives with a price difference of $20. Basically to make it an even comparison. You wouldn't want to compare a $20 gerb with a $100 PM2. That was what I meant

Cool idea for a thread. Could even do it tournament style if you really had time to kill.

I'm voting tenacious because it was my first spyderco and really got me into the brand. Its also a great weekend work knife (now my Dad's weekend work knife actually). The Leek is a great one for non-knife gadget oriented people because it is a solid knife thats easy to carry and speed-safe is fun.

Eventually I suggest a SnG vs Small Sebenza thread, because its gotta happen. But those can be "can of worm" threads.
