What's the deal with blade coating in general?

I know it's basically for looks, and i heard that it helps protect the blade metal better, but does it provide any other advantages?

Could someone tell me how bad a knife would look with black blade coating, after being used for a long time? Is it worth it? Any picutres would be seriously helpful.

It all depends on what you plan to do with your knife. If you just want to use it as a tool, then it doesn't matter since either way, coated or uncoated, the blade is eventually going to get scratched, scuffed, and worn. Some blade coatings do help keep rust to a minimum for example the BT2 coating on the M2 steel Benchmade Stryker. BT2 is much more durable than the Teflon stuff found on other knives, but it will still wear. Just how much depends on how often you use the knife. As far as advantages? Well, a black finish cuts down on glare and it makes the knife look "tactical" if that sort of thing is your bag. If you're into preserving the new look of your knife, then you may want to go with a stonewash finished blade to minimize the appearance of scratches. I look at it this way, if you spend good money on a quality knife and plan on carrying it, then by all means use it and get your money's worth. I'd rather carry a well used worn-looking quality knife and use it until it dies than worry about babying a knife to preserve it's cool looks.

Thanks for the pic, just what I needed.

Thanks for the comment, ears still open for more.

Benchmade will swap out the blade with a new one for $25 for a satin balde & for $35 for bt2 blade. They do carry some discontinued blades also.

I like to have a coating on my tool steel blades, and I like this for corrosion resistance rather than for aesthetics.

The tan coating on Busses and Swamp Rats is very tough, and doesn't look too bad when it wears/is scratched away.

The KG gun coat on Chris Reeves wears well, and goes a dull grey colour after quite a bit of use.

i guess it adds some corrosion protection even when worn, but usually i prefer satin finish myself, they just dont seem to look as funky as a lot of the coatings do when worn, all the coatings will scratch i have a knife with the bodycote diamond cote which is supposed to be pretty hard to scratch (according to darrel @ bodycote and others) and while its harder than most it will scratch/scuff up.

so all in all would rather have satin, but some really nice stuff comes only coated (ie BM 806D2) so i put up with it when i have too. also some knives look better coated (ie MT LCC) to me, wish someone would come up with something that didnt scuff so easily but i am not holding my breath.
