Knife Went Through Dishwasher

We had a...miscommunication in the kitchen. Since my wife was involved, I am clearly the one who made the mistake :)

But seriously...I have a Morakniv Basic 511 that went through the dishwasher. Fortunately, we're talking about a $10 knife and not some $1000 Shiragorov.

Is this a goner? If not, what's the best method to clean it up? Just CLP and elbow grease or should I do something else?

I don't think dishwashers get hot enough to affect a blade's temper - google says they're at about 150 degrees and I think it'd need to be significantly hotter to affect that...?

It's fine. Touch up the edge if it needs it & use it.

It's ruined...totally!!
pm me and Ill send my address, post it to me at your expense and I will dispose of it safely😉
Nah mate, a dishwasher might degrade the edge or weaken epoxy or wood handles, but a mora? A few wipes on a stone and it will be fine.😄

I think the Mora 511 has a carbon steel blade.
Carbon steel usually does OK in an alkaline solution and most dishwasher soaps are alkaline. The polymer handles that Mora uses are pretty well bonded to the handle, so I would not expect problems with the tang, either. It's true that some dishwasher soaps leave a residue, so I would rinse the knife in tap water, and dry it well. But other than that I really would not expect long term problems. You might have discoloration, but I'd not expect pitting. And it's pitting which causes problems.

Nothing major should happen to it - Imagine that you just sweated a lot on the knife and need to clean it.

There is a perception by many that if you put a knife through the dishwasher it will dissolve, the blade will get damaged and so on. I regularly wash my SS kitchen knives and they work fine. You may get some dryness in wooden handles after a few years.

I assume it is a Carbon Steel model, since you are worried about it. If you really want to go overboard you can remove the handle and wash and oil the part of the blade that is hidden in the handle (the tang) and clean the inside of the handle too. I recollect that this can be done with your Mora by putting the blade in a vice (softly) and tapping the handle with a rubber mallet, but I could be wrong regarding your model.

I do not think this is possible due to the way the handle is molded over the tang, as there is a notch that would prevent removal.

For the stainless steel version it's probably the best way to clean it. :) Even the carbon blade Mora will be fine if you wipe down afterwards. The wooden handle Moras wouldn't like it very much, but the dishwasher isn't hot enough to damage it otherwise. My main concern would be if there was water trapped inside of the handle, because of a small hole or crack in it.

I've seen knife damage from a dishwaher. It was a commercial dishwasher and the knives were run through in an old metal rack, where a lot of the plastic coating was missing. The high heat and commercial grade cleaners caused a galvanic reaction and eroded the edge.
Short version, you're fine dude, just party on.
