Ok people, I am looking for a 2.25-2.75inch folding blade that has a Phillips and flathead screwdriver/can opener. Preferably not in 440a steel. I tried to get an old ulster scout but it got away from me. Any suggestions?

One of my favorites I have carried since I was a kid is a Victorinox Tinker. Its got a great tool set for use in the city.

I second the Tinker, either the older 84mm or the newer 91mm version. It's hard to go wrong with one.

Attention SAK fans: 2.25" = 57.15mm, 2.75" = 69.85mm. He's potentially interested in a 58mm or 65mm SAK with Phillips and flathead screwdrivers.

Wenger made 65mm SAKs, but they never made one with a Phillips screwdriver, and nothing that size in the Delémont Collection has that tool.

Victorinox has half a dozen 58mm SAKs in production with both Phillips and flathead screwdrivers. In order of ascending price:

The Manager is a Rambler with a retractable ballpoint pen replacing the toothpick. The Midnite Manager is a Manager with an LED light replacing the tweezers.

The Midnite MiniChamp has an LED light replacing the tweezers.

The original MiniChamp did not have a Phillips screwdriver. They are long out of production but common used knives, so be aware.

These are all common TSA confiscations and easy to find on the big auction site, many confiscated from people who forgot they were carrying because they rarely used them. Some are advertising knives with obscure or unpopular advertisers.

The original 58 mm Victorinox light was a 2mm red LED with a 3V lithium battery (CR1025). Don't pay much for one of these. In 2008, it was replaced by a 3.5mm white LED with a 1.55V silver oxide battery (389E). The white LED is twice as bright as the red LED, but it is not an adequate substitute for a good AAA flashlight when you are out in the woods at night. At home with the power out, it is all you need. The red LED is good for finding a keyhole or circuit breaker, or for use in the dark without awakening a sleeper.

I'm not a fan of the removable pen in Victorinox's Plus Scales, but the retractable pen is a handy writing tool. It is pressurized so it writes upside down.

Victorinox used to make a retractable plastic-tip stylus for these knives, but I'm not finding it online and it may be out of production. It was handy for doing productive work on tablet computers, and for signing receipts on LED screens. "The handwriting is on the wall" but I probably won't live to see paper go the way of the clay tablet.

From the top down: stylus, retractable pen, removable pen.

Victorinox's stainless steel is soft and easy to sharpen. Give it few strokes on a fine ceramic stone and a few strokes on a leather strop.

Wait, I thought that was blade length? An Ulster Scout Knife is bigger than 58mm, isn't it?

Ulster Scout Knife? I thought he was talking about Black & Tans!

I had no idea the Ulster Knife Co. was one of the half dozen cutlers that made made classic Boy Scout folding knives, and I owned a BSA knife when I was a Scout. And yes, my knife was 3⁵⁄₈" long with a 2⁵⁄₈" blade, which is close to the size of a 91mm SAK. But I think J_mcrane was less than clear about what he wanted.

Lol!!! Well played my friend!!!! :D Like Cap said, it was a great write up!!

If you're going to use the Phillips a lot then an Explorer gives you a more useable inline screwdriver and adds a mag glass and scissors. A discontinued Passenger takes away the scissors..

I do wish they made more with the inline Phillips driver. Seems half the time I end up using the small driver on tr can opener for Phillips screws because the space tr screw is in will not allow the t-handle driver approach.

So I'm learning that you guys not only measure by mm but length of handle. I like this brave new world. When I said 2.25-2.75, I was thinking blade size. I have learned a lot even since posting. I will probably look at cadet size or larger but no larger than 91mm. I like the evolgrip 16 or 11 because of the wider belly of the blade. The pioneer in alox looks classy. Thank you for all the help so far. I have my grandfathers ulster scout knife but I am uncomfortable edcing it. And while I haven't lost a knife in 15 years, this one is irreplaceable.

The Pioneer and Farmer are a great choice. They don't have a dedicated Phillips driver, but the small screwdriver on the can opener is designed to work with Phillips screws and works surprisingly well on many screws.

Maybe look at a Leatherman c33T knife.

Good suggestion. I have one, and like it a lot. The blade is 420HC, and isn't bad at all. It's a nice, well designed little toughie and because of its pillared construction, easy to clean. It's also fun to flick open.

I strongly recommend the leatherman c33t use it everyday on the crew I am on, we cut tubing,rope,tape-use the slot and phillips all the time for small hose clamps ,etc....
