How big of an issue is buying a knife with discoloration on the blade edge presumably caused by the steel getting too hot during secondary grinding? Is it merely cosmetic or is the heat treat affected?

Discoloration could be from use too.....Carbon steel develops a dark patina. Picture would be best...

Carbon stains, discolors, and even rusts on occasion, I'd be worried about rainbow streaks in the steel, my own limited knowledge would wonder if it's from improper HT

"Presumably" is a red flag. First determine if it actually is caused by overheating, then discuss the impact of such an event. I have beaucoup, beaucoup knives. Never seen a mark caused by overheating during the grind or heat treat. I have seen a bit of staining on "stainless" blades from corrosion. Let's see the pics, so we know what we are discussing.

As a registered user, you can post pictures using a picture hosting site. I use Imgur, but there are others. Once you have uploaded a picture to the hosting site, copy the web address of the picture. Note: picture web addresses must end in .jpg or .gif

Then go to your post and click the image tool on the toolbar next to the smiley tool. Click the link icon in the popup. (Looks like a chain.) Paste the picture address into the window. Then click the INSERT button.

I had a Benchmade with discoloring due to getting too hot during grinding. BM replaced the blade under warranty.
