Knife won't open

Hi all

I recently bought a new BM 710 w/M390 steel and the pivot screw was loose when it came out of the box. So I tried tightening it back up with a torx screw driver and now I can't open the darn thing. When I tried loosening it, I think I stripped the screw so either I....

a.) continue to strip it until the next size fits

or

b.) Have benchmade take a look at it. I am not sure about this because I am not sure if the warranty covers it or not since this is a pretty rare incident. If I BM is able to fix this do you know what kind of price range I'm looking at?

I really want to get this fixed. Been 24 hours and now its broke. :(

If your 710 is anything similar to the one I bought years ago (w/D2 blade), the pivot may very well loosen up on it's own, IF you can exercise it a bit. It's the one thing about that knife that really annoyed me. I was in the habit of repeatedly opening & closing it (new toy), and noticed it was getting much easier. Initially, I thought is was a good thing, until I realized the pivot screw was backing out on it's own. If you can get a firm grip on the blade spine with pliers, cushioned with a piece of leather or something similar to force it open, exercising the pivot might be worth a try.

Thanks for help. I am doing that right now.

My only concern is that the pivot screw will continue to loosen with regular use, IF it will loosen up with a pair of klines. *Made a typo, had to correct it*

I really want to know if there are any more options and if Benchmade will FIX this.

Thanks.

Same thing happened to me with a Sog trident. The assisted opening would work because I tightened it to much but the screw stripped so I couldn't loosen it. I kept opening and closing it. Now it works fine and I havn't had a problem since. I do not carry that knife to much though so i don't know if the screw would back out over time. I don't think that I would try the first option you mention because it would probably just strip it and make it round, then no matter what size screw you use it wouldn't be able to grip it. I would just call benchmade and describe the problem and ask them what they could do.

Give Benchmade a call. This sort of thing happens a lot, across many brands of knives. They're used to it, so don't worry about putting them off. At a minimum, they should give you a clearer idea of how to proceed. Being that the knife is new, and relatively undamaged (aside from the screw), I think your chances of getting it fixed are pretty good.

In the longer term, once you have a new screw in place, many here have used a little bit of blue Loctite on the threads to keep the screw from backing out again.

Just called BM and they said it falls under the warranty. Gonna ship it out today and can't wait to get it back.
