What a great way to spend a weekend! John at JK knives was a pleasure to learn from and was a very gracious host all weekend. All in all a great time learning and chatting with some new friends.

The process was demonstrated very well every step of the way with never a sense of being rushed. John was also willing to let each person take whatever time they needed to complete each step on their own, but was always there willing to help if needed.

If you are close and willing to spend a weekend learning a trade or just wanna have fun and make something cool that is of high quality don't pass up one of Johns classes. I will be doing another if the chance comes along for sure!

A few pics of my finished knife after oiling the handles and taking the edge to the edge pro. This O-1 steel takes an amazingly sharp and keen edge!

I`m glad you enjoyed the class. I will be offering more Basic Classes, and a more Advanced Class (limited to 4 people at a time, at a higher cost), but the size of the knife will be up to 1 1/2" tall x 12" long x makers choice of either 1/8" or 3/16" thick steel.

I know so much has been said about Johns class already but i just can't stand to not give my thoughts...
First I must say I enjoyed the hell out of the class and time spent with John and all the other great members. If I lived a bit closer John would probably have to kick me out every weekend!

So here's how it worked...
John would explain 1 step at a time and demonstrate that step on his own knife. He would then stand up and literally walk away. This was the best part IMO. The ONLY time he would peek over our shoulder is when someone asked for advice or help. He was more than willing and excited to answer any and all silly questions we had. We were NEVER rushed and he could care less when we finished. Nothing was held back at all. The man had no secrets and is truly and open book.

I will be attending other classes and contacting John for the advanced class also. I can't recommend the basic class enough either. If your in or even remotely close to Illinois you WILL NOT regret signing up folks! With all of the technology these days anyone can make a knife, BUT hand making is truly something special.

I'm so pleased with how my knife turned out I want to show it off more!

John,
Thanks again so much! I'm excited to call you a friend.

Thanks. You really won the lottery with that bocote! Thanks for starting this thread and I hope you don't mind all my pics.

No way do I mind. Everyone can jump in and share their pics and thoughts. Would be nice if everybody did!

Thanks for the mini reviews and pictures. I like seeing the different designs come to life over a 16 hour period.

The wood is looking good fellas!

I don't have much to say that the others already haven't.

If you've ever considered making your own knife, and you can make it to one of John's classes, then do it. This is one of the most relaxed, yet unbelievably informative classes I'be ever taken. Plus, meeting fellow forum members and John was a great experience.

John - Thanks again for opening up your shop and home to all of us, and making us feel so welcomed.

Now, another gratuitous photo of my knife!

Elgin, that turned out SO nice! The aluminum pins were definitely the right choice with the black Micarta.
