Well, the only review I can give is of the appearance. The OVB is definitely of first class construction. There's not a bad line anywhere. The blade follows the original as close as is possible in a mass produced copy. The grind lines are very symmetrical and the finish is very good. Where the blade and guard meet there is an almost imperceptible juncture, which is outstanding for a production piece. The fit of the handle to the guard is perfect and the handle itself is hand filling without being overly large for even a small hand. The people at Camillus couldn't copy Jerry's work exactly, but they did a heck of a job for the asking price. I'm sure the knife would make a fantastic light camp knife, but I don't see many people using this one. Camillus supplies a real nice leather sheath and a zippered case, too, just like comes with a lot of handmades. Now, I don't fancy myself a reviewer, so that's about the extent of what I can tell ya'. Hopefully someone who is, can give you more info, if that doesn't tell you what you wanted to know.

Jocko, When Camillus contracted with Jerry to make a commercial version of his Commenchero Bowie, they obviously needed a prototype to work from. The knife shown above was the the Commenchero that Jerry used to make them that prototype. He traced this knife blade to make them a pattern, and you can tell that the blades are identical. When I bought the Commenchero from Jerry, he sent me an owners certificate stating that this is the knife he used to make a prototype for Camillus. So, in effect, my knife is the prototype of the prototype. The knife Jerry sent Camillus was probably not a usable knife. At least, I can see no reason for it to have been.

Camillus decided, later on, to use a different guard and a different handle, but they kept the blade from my original. I think the guard and handle were probably changed to keep costs down. The guard and handle shapes on my Commenchero should have been more expensive to re-produce.

If I'm way off base on any of the above, maybe Will or Jerry will come on board and straighten it out. The only thing that I know for sure, is that my Commenchero was used as the first pattern for the OVB bowie.

HDCharlie,

Both are fine lookin' blades! You asked if anyone else had received their OVB yet... well tracking tells me tommorrow after work mine will be in hand!!!

Bald 1. Glad you like your new OVB camillus knife. I sure like them. The proto type of the protro you have has a funny story behind it in a way. That like to have gave Will the vapors. I turned in that knife orginially but then thought that I should stay with a more traditional bowie so asked them to hold up and go with the one that is out. I thought Will was going to vapor lock on me but my hat is off to Camillus for working so well with their "bull pen" guys cause they actually gathered their breath and started reworking. I think that is what I have enjoyed so much with them in that if I wanted a bit more swell at the butt for grip when swinging the knife and even though it was only a little I asked for they did it. The proto of the finished knife should have been given frequent flyer mileage program before it was finished.
Storm coming up here so I got to get off this thing tonight. Do not want a repeat of what happened two weeks ago. I will keep an eye on the thread if I can help with anything.
