I'm new to knife making and have helped make a few fixed blade types but don't have my own equipment. I'm thinking of making a few folding knives from this website but I’m not too sure what tools I need to do the job. The American Whittler Slipjoint Folder Kit is the one I’m thinking about trying. How finished is this knife? What tools do I need to get into something like this? Does the knife kit come with directions? I'm for sure planning to get a belt sander but is the stock premade or does it need shaped? Thanks ahead for the help.

Hey, I see you are from Hayesville, I may be moving up that way in a few years. As far as that kit you are looking at buying....it seems you must buy the wood scales separate (which seem expensive on that website IMO). As far as tools go, you'll need to cut the wood to fit the insert section, which you can do inexpensively with a coping saw if you don't have a jigsaw. A drill press/hand drill to make the holes for the supplied pins. A belt sander will be usefull for grinding down the pins and wood as desired. Adding some epoxy when putting the wood inserts in won't hurt either.

I hope that was of some help, good luck.

Hayesville is a beautiful place. I just moved back here a few years ago. It did seem like the wood was a little expensive but I actually have some deer antler I’d like to try for the handles. Thanks for the help. Hope your move to Hayesville works out.
