Let me introduce Ilia Kulikov - knifemaker from Yaroslavl. This is his knives galery:

You may notice that all blades are kind of short - russian law considers knife as a weapon, knifemakers have to make short blades, no guard etc. - to make knife not a weapon but tool or it will be illegal. This was left fron soviet era - communists were so afraid of the people - they made even knives illegal.
In general all of knives - damascus but some of them have bulat blades.
This knives have bulat blades:

Thanks, Vassili.

Ilia has got talent. There's no doubt about it.

I like the damascus blades. Greater exposure will be good for his career.

Very nice. I love the bulat blades, but don't know exactly what bulat is. It looks like some of the wootz I have seen.

What you posted about blade length is very interesting. I have seen many knives from Russian makers with long blades and double guards. Many Russian makers make Bowies. Are they allowed to do this for export or are they just thumbing their noses at the authorities?

Edited to add: I looked up bulat steel and found out why it looks like wootz. It is because bulat and wootz are one and the same.

Bulat as I understand is kind of wootz, but not exactly same wootz wich antique indian produced. Ilia's site has probably best collection of articles about dmascus, wootz, bulat - all in russian, unfortunately.
In Russia there are three gradation on knives:
weapon - only for armed forces (knives intend to be a weapon - like SOG Bowie)
hunting - for registred hunters
tools - for general population
First and second knives are numbered.
If you are licensed knifemaker or artist (member of artisian union etc) - you may make any knives. This is Russian Bladesmith guild for example:

Thanks,
Vassili.

So how would you feel about doing a translation for us. ;) :D

Thanks for the info, I learned something today and that's a good thing.

It't too much for me! I may only help with questions and answers - like being gateway between you and Russian guys.
Thanks, Vassili.

If i was interested in finding out more information about this maker and his knives, how would I go about doing this?

Couldn't help notice the similarity to my small Peter Martin.
