Knifemaker looking to make simple sheaths

Greetings:

I'm sure you've gotten this type of question many times.

I've been making knives for about two years now and am finally starting to make some good blades. I make mostly bushcraft and hunting knives. The problem is, they have no sheaths. I'd like to give a few away as presents, but it seems kind of silly to give a man a knife he can't carry. So, I'd like to learn how to make a very, very basic sheath, something that does not need many tools or any expertise. I know good leathercraft can take years to master, so I know I won't be making any sheaths that will turn heads or win awards--all I want is sheaths that can adequately be strapped on a belt and hold a knife.

Fortunately, there's a Tandy close to my house, so leather is not a problem.

Can you recommend any videos, or are there any tutorials on this thread? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sprayman

Paul also has a series of videos that folks swear by. Always alot of help here too. Check the stickies at the top of the page. Quite a few tutorials.

Your local Tandy may have some basic crafting classes,or at least someone to help you get pointed in the right direction. In fact, Tandy's website has hours of video tutorials.

Get the book "The Art of Hand Sewing Leather" by Al Stohlman and the "Deluxe Hand Stitching" kit -- both from Tandy -- and you'll be well on your way. I didn't like making sheaths for the longest time. But then I chilled, and now I find it puts me in a more meditative state than making the actual knife. But it's definitely a different mindset.
