I have developed a hobby out of spiffing up old cheap clamshell knives, usually Imperial traditional slip joints. I recently thought it would be nice to turn it into a self-funded hobby by trying to sell some of them on the forums. I actually sold my first, a small pen knife, recently. Nothing was said to me at that time from any admins, but I still worry about abusing the exchange. Typically with these knives I disassemble them, clean them, and fabricate new handle scales and/or bolsters for them.

Is this type of thing okay as long as I dont mention sales of the knives anywhere other than my sales threads on the exchange?

You would need a makers membership to sell anything that you've made or embellished.

Start a separate thread, include the transaction number for your new purchase in the title and ask Spark to prorate your gold into your knifemaker, then you wait for a while until it happens. You may also want to gloss over the rules in the Exchange regarding knifemakers, they differ quite a bit than those for gold/platinum members. Just a word of caution, a knife that began life as a production knife, is a customized knife, a knife made from scratch either by sole authorship (1 man doing all the work including the design) or out of water jet parts, etc, is more of a custom knife. Everyone has a different definition of this, but this is really what we tend to go by. If you design the piece and put your own spin on it, then that is one thing. Pimping a GEC, adding CF scales, and a clip, does not a custom knife make.

If I understand what you are saying, modified (or "customized") knives I make do not belong in the custom knife sales area. I would COMPLETELY agree! I have a long way to go before I have anything worthy of stepping up to the plate in there. My intent the whole time was to post them as modified production knives in the traditional exchange.

Don't sell yourself short, practice makes perfect. If your interest and passion is there, you will get there in no time.
