Alright, so after successful completion of the first ever JK Handmade Knives Knifemakers Workshop, John asked us kindly if we could jump on here and start a thread reviewing the experience and picking at the little things to help him improve on the experience for subsequent classes. I'll do my best here, though I really have no complaints about it, to try and poke at how he can improve things in the future if possible. I'll break this into a few subcategories and rate on a scale from 0-10, 0 being worst experience ever, and 10 being outstanding, nothing I would change about it. Categories will be:

Cost/Value
Content/Curriculum
Food(just for fun)
Instructor
Overall Rating

So Let's begin!

Cost/Value: Solid 10
We had the opportunity this weekend to spend time learning from a professional knifemaker, create a knife from scratch, of OUR OWN DESIGN! This was huge, if I was to contract John to make the knife of my design, it would have cost far more than the price of this course. For $150, we spent two days of John's time, using his equipment with all materials provided except personal items. This in my book was a steal for the experience of getting to make a custom knife. The Value is incalculable however. For $150, we began learning a new skill from a pro that I could now take forward and start making knives in my garage and continuing the hobby if I wanted to, knowing that the quality would be far better than if I had not attended the course, and I don't think a dollar value could be put on that.

Content/Curriculum: Another 10 from me
The weekend was very well thought out, from the moment we all got there, there was a plan for each and every step of the process, and John was ready to explain it fully, no matter how simple it was. From cutting the stock to grinding a rough design to smoothing out micarta scales, it was all very well explained and exampled by John before attempting it on our own. The curriculum was very well thought out and the steps were very simple to follow from start to finish, there was rarely a question as to what was supposed to be done at any given step.

Food: Gotta go with a 8 here...
This is a silly rating, and I'm sure I'm the outlyer. If this is what sways your decision on whether to or to not come on a weekend... you shouldn't come... So, I'm not a fan of hot dogs... Most Americans love hot dogs, but they freak me out, so I steer away. Someone left the grill unattended while someone else (me) needed help with his grinding, and they ended up charred, which I think improved upon the hot dog flavor, so they were ok. Burgers the second day, were outstanding. Drinks were always readily available if needed, and John was constantly on top of making sure everyone was hydrated and happy as could be.

Instructor: 11 from me!
John was an outstanding instructor and host to all of us using his shop this weekend. You can tell in the first ten minutes that John is a highly knowledgeable knifemaker with a lot of experience, that he cares a lot about the knifemaking hobby/profession and he's a great guy to be around and someone you'd love to grab a beer with outside of the class as well. He was incredibly patient with all the noobie "knifemakers" he was teaching, very ready to offer advice and tips to do things differently/better, but still gave everyone creative license and space to make or break their knives. If/when you did mess up on your design, he was very ready to help show you how to fix that mistake and I thought that was incredibly helpful especially.
Overall Experience: Easy 10
I'll let everyone speak for themselves, but I had an awesome time at this workshop. I met a few guys that I see on here all the time, experienced making a knife first hand and had a great time doing it. I would highly highly recommend jumping into one of these that John puts on. He's a Grade A individual and knifemaker, as most people here know already. Expect to learn some new things and have an open mind. I know I'm going to try to jump into another one of these in the future :).
Thanks again John for a great weekend!

Pardon the many posts here... for some reason, it would not allow me to post that whole thing at once in my browser... Go figure.

Amazing and honest right up! I'll be following this thread as well!

Hot dog phobia?......If only I had known[emoji57] I'll chime in on the review later. Good start Ethan.

Cost/Value - 10 - Our class, being the first, was an experiment for JK, and we went through more belts than he had figured on, so he will have to adjust his price a bit I think. The value for a two day instructor led workshop was almost embarassingly cheap. However, John sets the price and each student received 8 hours of help/instruction, use of his machines and materials, simple burger and chips lunch both days and in the end their own handmade knife. Can't go wrong.

Content/Curriculum - 9 - John obviously knows stock-removal inside and out, and it shows. I am not one to rate a 10 for every category, as that leaves little room for improvement. I think John will polish up the delivery over time as he feels out how students react to his instruction and which operations require more show and tell. I think there should be a safety brief before the class starts.
John might consider a simple course outline and safety brief that could be send electronically to participants that would spell out what they would expect for the days of training.
I have little to critique, I just know that things get smoother and more polished as the instructor gets more experience with how the classes go. Amazingly smooth for John's very first try at this - seriously!

Food - John provided hot dogs and chips on day one, hamburgers and chips on day two, both grilled on a weber cooker while he was trying to keep the students all going. He did an amazing job; I have never seen him running around like that before! John also provided sodas and water for everyone. You don't see that very often in classes, particularly at this price point. I fully expected that we would be on our own for lunch. If it were me I might have had everyone get their own lunch and provided coffee and donuts in the morning; that is what I do for the classes I teach (not knifemaking...). John was a great host and I thank him for the food which was totally unexpected.

Instructor - 10 John knows his stuff and is able to accomplish great things with simple machines and hand tools. He was able to get everyone through the class with no injuries and everyone came out of the class with their very own knife, which is an amazing achievement. I think that most of the class had no machining experience, and John had everyone throwing sparks early on the first day. John actually made a customer knife during the class, and he would perform the current operation on that knife while we all watched. He explained the nuance of each step as he performed the machining etc, and then each student tried their hand at the operation.
If a student screwed up (and that happened for everyone at one point), John would step in and show the student what they needed to do to correct it, or he would save the knife himself if it was a particularly serious foul up.
John also provided positive reinforcement, telling students what they were doing right, the sign of a great instructor. He also was not in your face, he would lay back and let you work and only stepped in if you asked or looked like you needed help.

Overall Rating - 10 I think this is one of the most fun weekends I have had in a while. I have enjoyed many gatherings at the JK Shops and Industrial Complex in Mokena, but this one was different and extreme fun in a different way.

If John does this again, and I hope he does, you should jump on the chance to have John walk you through the process - it was a ball of fun and now I have a new JK that I can play with! Pew Pew!

Thanks guys! I know Saturday was kind of long at around 9 hours, but that made Sunday a bit shorter at 7 - 8 hours.

Great reviews! I couldn't fit it in the schedule this year but will watch for next year's workshop. It sounds like a great experience.

Haha, no phobia of hot dogs, just low grade disdain. I do however now have a phobia of whatever that stuff John was eating was...

Cost/Value -10
Could not have asked for more. Learning a skill is worth every penny of the cost of the course plus we got to take home a knife. Of course many more hours of applying these skills will be required to turn out a quality product as John does.

Content/Curriculum - 9.5
Well if improvements need to be made, I sure don't know what it would be. Maybe a short safety talk at the beginning of the class. I went to a forging class and a short safety talk was given. They told us not pick any quarters off of the ground. Sometimes for fun a person doing the forging will heat up a quarter and toss it in the ground to see if some one will pick it up. I think they were just kidding :)
But seriously John did a perfect job of content/curriculum.

Food(just for fun)=NA
I'm the one who ate the strange lunch that is unfamiliar and even phobic. It is a salad of vegetables ground up in a food processor. I bring my own so I can stay on my healthy diet mainly to keep my cholesterol level down.

Instructor-11
John has a passion for knife making and is a skilled machinist. He has the ability to transfer his skills to the students in a way that is easy to understand and apply. As mentioned above he took time to give the students the personal attention as needed.
I gave John an 11 because he is more than just an instructor, he is a genuine person that would give you the shirt off his back.

Overall Rating -10
I will recommend this class for anyone interested in knife making. They will learn what it takes to build knives. I made new friends and had lots of fun.
Thanks John for doing this, it was a great experience.
PS. I like my new knife.
