I'm not on Facebook I prefer to talk to my friends in person, but several people have ask me why I don't get an accpount and promote my business there. So are there any makers here who use Facebook for business? If so how do you go about it ?

Not a bad idea really. FB is pretty universal among the 30 and under crowd. Not everyone who uses it is crazy about it, but it's a good system for keeping in touch with people. I am not real clear on the setup for business but there are plenty out there that use it instead of or in addition to a mailing list.

I hadn't thought of it, but I'll definitely be making use of it once I'm ready to start selling my work. I'll also be setting up a web site which I'm already constructing so it's ready. I think knife making is a craft that is very well suited to the online world. There are a relatively small number of people doing it, even if you include pure hobbyists. The potential market is huge, but for any particular knife it might be fairly small. This makes it tougher to get your work in front of the right person. Online search allows someone to search for what they want and if you do your part right your work is presented to them. It probably won't replace face to face sales, but even there it makes local customers more likely to find you and make contact. Facebook makes it easy to keep in touch with customers with minimal hassle, and makes word of mouth much more effective for people who uses facebook.

I use it for a number of firearm related companies I buy from. They post updates about sales, special buys, upcoming events, new products and general company PR. It is a lot more cost effective for them than a mass mailing through the postal service and lets them put out more timely updates.

I guess I do, in a way.

I honestly don't get Facebook. Myspace was simple and made sense and was easy for me to stay in touch with old friends. Facebook came along and was "teh cooler."

Signed up just because my friends said it was cool and I personally think it is "teh gey." LMAO ;)

I don't get all the bullshit like farmville, and "so and so poked you," and "so and so sent you a drink."

But I do get that I posted pics of knives on there and all of a sudden I went from like 5 actual friends to having over 200 because of knife stuff.

Seems like a simple way to keep your name out there.

I honestly don't have a clue who over half the people on my "friends list" are. I have almost no personal information on it... just pics of knives and some pics of Angi, Erin, and I doing fun stuff.

I get a lot of feedback on the knifestuff.

I have a page dedicated to my knives. I update it with new knife pictures and work in progress updates. Most of my friends are knife makers but some are also clients. I figure with all the networking that goes on it's free shameless self promotion.

I use it off and on to post a pic of a good one. Not too much though.

I don't have a dedicated facebook page for my business, but I do post knife pics and statuses related to knife making pretty often. Has generated some orders.

I'm on it.

Matter of fact, I'm giving away this modified Becker on my FB site right now.

I'm not a member of Face Book. Do you fellows use yiour real names or just stay with the ones that hide your names? Frank

As much as I disliked facebook I ended up with an account. My church uses it heavily to send out information. Having one I decided to post knife work. Like Nick I don't do the farmville and game crap. Its sold knives for as well as educated folks that aren't really sure what to expect with a hndmade knife. They see in progress pictures from start to finish and realize why a custom knife isn't less than 60 bucks. I use my real name on it, I don't know many who go by other names

Hello Ryan.
You are always doin' good stuff, and I'm user the Facebook thing is the very best with one of your WIPs in there. Regards. Frank

My daughter conned me into setting up a Facebook account. While I don't advertise per-se, I do have a few pics of knives there. I haven't made a sale from facebook, but have received some "kind" comments.

Being active in knife related forums and having a website are your best bets.

Robert

i don't use it for business, but i do have a group for knives and frequently use it to show my current work to my friends.

Nice work Allen and I see that you used your real name !!! Frank

Thanks! Oh, and be careful when you sign up and they ask for your full name. They will use that as your facebook name. I have seen a few people running around with middle names that they never shared or first names that they never used.
