Knifemakers in the Phoenix AZ area?

Hi, I am a noob knifemaker and engraver and would like to find a master maker in my area who could give me some first hand advice and tips (mostly in knifemaking, my engraving is progressing at its own rate).

I am a jewelry designer and modelmaker and have been working on a couple of blades of 440c with just an angle grinder and a mini hand-held sander. Otherwise the filework and hand sanding have been taking months of here-and-there work.

Most important thing to mention, i live in Chandler, AZ. I have been searching all morning on the net and can't seem to find let alone get in touch with any local knifemakers to see if they would be willing to lend me some of their time and instruction.

If anyone here is in the Phoenix area or knows a knife maker who is, please let me know. I appreciate any help.

You can email me directly at morticelli-at-cox-dot-net. Thanks!

Hi Michael,

I'm a newbie also in Chandler, welcome!

To get connected with a great group of helpful (and some well known) bladesmiths/blacksmiths, check out the Arizona Artist Blacksmith Association.

D'holder is in Peoria or Glendale I think.

Tai Goo is in Tucson and he teaches private lessons. I spent two days with him this spring and it was a great experience.

Hope that helps...feel free to email me if you have any questions that you feel a fellow local newbie could help you with.

Welcome to Shoptak, Michael. It is a good place to pick up tips.

Here are some names from Knives 2009 you could search on in greater Pheonix:
Tim Hancock
Ray Rybar
Bob Karp
Robert Hankins
Michael Snare
Michael Tamboli
Charles Weiss
Bill Wolf

There are about 50 makers listed in AZ. There are probably more than I listed within 20 miles of you, but I'm not very familiar with your local map.

Has anyone heard or seen Native American Hand Carved Crown Stag Handled knives by a maker who goes by "OZ", Not Jim Ort
The custom knife was sold in Arizona and re purchased by me, and I can't find anything on this maker,
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just joined the local guild yesterday for the same reason as you. Haven't dove into it much yet, but the website lists several makers that offer classes.

I put an add on Craigslist a couple of years ago when I started welding. Asked for someone that was willing to come by and help dial me in on machine settings, techniques, etc.

One guy took mercy on me and came by two e, couple hours each time, $50/each. Best money I've spent in getting me going on my journey.

Maybe a knife guy may answer.
