I watch for and post on, threads by newbies asking for feedback on their first knives. I try to be encouraging without being unrealistic about their efforts.
Knifemakers, who have been working at this for a few years, will agree, that this is an ongoing, learning experience. A journey without an end. I think we might be more helpfull to those people just beginning if they could see what we made when we started. I keep my first knife on a small stand at the forge. It's an inspiration. I have only been on Blade Forums for about a year, so if this is a stickey hanging out in the archives, just tell me; nothing new here.Fred
Here it is   No feedback needed.

This isn't the first, but it's out of the first couple of batches of blades I made.

This is the first knife I made by myself at home. D2 and bone. I sent it out for HT.

Not my very first knife...but my first forged to shape knife. very light grinding after forging with 220 grit. The rest was hand sanding to 600.Steel was 1095,handle is tiger maple with NS guard. The picture sucks but thats another ordeal I'm trying to deal with.Making the knife was easier.

My first? do I have to?

You guessed it, it's an old horseshoe, I think I was 13

How about my second?

I used wrought iron and an old nicholson file to weld up the blade, and wrought iron for the fittings. No power tools where used at all, it was welded up, forged to shape, and the all the stock removal was done with files and sandpaper. I was 14.

There are some nice first knives here! Tony it looks to me like you started out flying; those are really cool. I can tell you've always liked knives. I bet we had similar "frontier" fantasies when we were kids. :) Michael, I was not at all surprised to see what your first knife looked like! That's just amazing. You clearly have always known what you like and have never been afraid to use the finest materials. It sure pays off. Brian I can remember your first knife too, and remember appreciating the desire to make the difficult plunge and knowing how much work it would've been. I still like that knife but you have made fantastic progress in just a couple of years. You're on your way!

Fred, your first knife is a class act all the way. I really like that, it's a man's knife! Very cool. Thanks for starting this thread!

Guys, I am amazed to see what some of your first efforts were. I think the ability to make a knife is lodged deep inside all of us. It just comes out differently in each person. Primal, like when Arnold met the preditor, who I agree was one ugly---- ----. Did anyone notice, the guard on my first knife was made out of a brass hammer head that I cut one face off, cut the slot and drove it home. If I remember correctly it took me three days the brass was so hard. Keep those pictures coming.
