Are you involved with a group? Was thinking to join one but am having a hard time finding one...

Saw a post some time ago on NY groups specific to knifemaking..... is there any? I am in the Rochester area...

Mike, To my knowledge there is no groups in NY. I have researched to no end and can't find a NY organization.

Try looking up your local ABANA chapter, there is usually a core of members who specialize in knifemaking. At least that's true here in Florida. -Guy Thomas

I'm sure it takes a lot of effort, but every organization was started by someone at some point. If you live in a state that doesn't have a knifemakers guild it could be a great opportunity to get together with other makers and start one. It doesn't have to be on a grand scale to start off with.

Just a thought.

Start a group RA and Mike. It doesn't have to be anything official just a get together. You will be surprised at how quickly you will have people wanting to come over for BBQs and knifemaking. It has worked for the Neo-Tribal Metalsmiths. We started out as just a small get together here in Tucson 6 years ago and now we have full parties happening all over the place. Once a few years ago we had over a hundred people show up at one of our full moon gatherings forging and BBQing. It's a blast! There has never been a single fight or even a loud arguement that I have seen or heard of. Just good times and a lot of knifemaking. This last full moon there was a full moon forging gathering going on in North Carolina and in Washington state. The Neo-Tribal movement was built on BBQs.

I'd go with what Tim Lively and Andrew McLurkin have stated. Find someone and just have a get together. It will grow on word of mouth. Post the get together time and date on the forums. Tell everybody how much fun it was and it will take off.

I am a member of the North Carolina Custom Knifemakers Guild and a Neo-Tribal Metalsmith. Both of these groups were started in the same way. A few people decided to get together and it has grown ever since.
The Neo-Tribal Full Moon Gatherings are a blast. Myself and a friend named Dana Acker met at a knife show. The subject of Neo-Tribal was brought up in conversation and not more than a month later we had our first Full Moon party with about 20 people.

Tim Lively and Tai Goo started the Neo-Tribal Metalsmith art movement in Tucson, Arizona and now it has spread all over the world.
