Hello,

I just did a Video on Flat grinding, I am also going to do a Video on Each of the other grinds also, Hollow Grinding, Chisel Grinding, Convex Grind, and a Hollow Chisel Grind.

my Question is what would you like to see Technique wise as it applys to Knifemaking
and possibly Sheathmaking(consealex/kydex)??

I am cheaking into Getting these Done and copyed at a resonable price,,around the 10.00
15.00 Range And compiling A knifemaker Video series that adresses the TECHNIQUE aspect.

The video`s out there i think lack in that they do not cover the Getting out the mistake`s
aspect of knifemaking or do they cover Learning Solid Techniques that produce Repeatability to the beggining Knifemaker.

so what are your ideas??

Oh yea and this will show in my videos how to produce Outstanding blades that compare
to blades made using Expensive Equipment,
that really isnt needed to produce great Knives. 8-)
,,but it will also get more people out of the Mindset that you need Expensive Equipment to make Great knives.

I think it could do nothing except ADVANCE the Art of Knifemaking, giving Ordinary People the tools and Techniques for producing Superior Knives. 8-)

Please Contribute your ideas!!

Take Care,

On the Knifemaking Videos, I notice a constant thread here from new/novice people who want to just experience the thrill of making "their" own knife, to those of us who have already been bitten by the bug, to those who make a living from their craft. That thread is the sharing of knowledge. No matter what, we all started out making that first knife, mistakes and all, but to us, it is still the best knife.

If you are doing a series of videos, then start at the begining, and show how each step is done, from the design concept,ie what works, what doesn't, to types of steels to work with, stock removal-vs-forging, grinding ,finishing, etc.

I think the basic idea is

and I think that this is my longest post to date.

quite frankly...and with tongue in cheek.. i would like to see a video of cold steel knives and mad dog knives standing up to full auto attack by an MP5/AR15/FAL in succession....you asked

I would buy a video that shows how to make a bowie knife that will pass the "American Bladesmith Society" Journeyman Test And after that the Master Test. Bruce Bump

Hello,

I can Pass that Journeymans test with a Stock removal 5160 blade, just like the bowie i ground in the Flat grind video.

Dats an easy one!!! 8-)

The Master Smith test is another animal all together,,mandatory pieces,,ect.ect..damascus of your own too.

I mean the Techniques of assembly of the Knives they want if you could make them in Carbon steel are easy to do, but i dont make damascus. Leaves me out i guess.<sigh>

Allen,
Do I get to play Siskel & Ebert with your new video!? Just kidding. Really though, if there is one thing I have come to believe about all "how to" videos, regardless of what the topic may be, each is a lot like the old Karate Kid movie.........."show me sand da floor".........."show me paint the fence". I'm not poking fun, but if you really think about it, videos give folks a starting reference (which is what they should do)
What I'm getting at is just make sure you let folks know that it is the way you do things in your shop, and to apply what they learn from the video to their shop, and their conditions. Sometime beginners expect too much, and don't yet have the experience to take the next logical step. I think if you look at selling videos with this in mind, you'll have a lot less grief, and sales would be much better. NOW, I want a video on how to get my wife and daughter to do the jobs in the shop that I don't like.....Like making scabbards!! :-)
Send me the sizes for the 52100 again, I've got a bunch forged out, but Mandi cleaned the computer area, and now I can't find your note.

Not really technique, but what I think would make a great video is a demonstration of the strengths and weaknesses of each grind.

I have two suggestions:

1) Soldering techniques (guards)

2) how to thread tangs for screw on buttcaps

Allen,
So far all the subject matter sounds good. But........you need some hot looking girls doing the actual grinding in the videos! Sort of like the girls and guns videos they sell at the gun shows!!:P
Seriously, I think that covering the basics would be good for people starting out. Consider what is asked the most here on the Forums. I always mention the disk grinder as being the least expensive way to get proffesional results. Building one and learning to use it, I think would be a good video!
