Hey guys, I was wondering if there are any good knifemaking videos out there. I tried running a search and found a reference to a Ron Hood knifemaking video, but that's about it. I'm looking to enter the world of knifemaking but would like to see it done before I start investing all of my time and money into something that may be beyond my means. Thanks.

You might want to check out "The Loveless Legend - how to make knives". Its a great video by one of the masters. I see it on ebay from time to time.

Ricky fowler has one out,it is expensize, I have the loveless legend video,I think they leave alot out,and the tools he uses a commen man
can not afford.

If you are interested in forging then you should get Ed Fowlers video. It takes you step by step through the making of a knife. Wayne Goddard also has a video and if you go to Centaur forges web site you can find many others. BUT Eds' is the only one that you really need.:)

There are videos that you can download at www.knifeshop.tv . There are videos on hollow grinding, flat grinding, and how to make a clip point. I haven't watched them yet, but I've downloaded the grinding ones. I hope they help.
Oh, by the way, we loved those chocolate covered Macadamias. Thanks a lot.:D

Z, here are the URLs for some of the above mentioned videos:

Texas Knifemaker's Supply - Loveless and others like Ed Fowler, Jim Hrisoulas, Wayne Goddard and more. From comments on this forum though, I'd recommend you order via the phone rather than their website. Personally I've never had any success ordering off their site, and I've really tried. Other supply houses have videos too, of course.

Gene Osborne's video is fantastic, but for this particular knife he uses a grinding jig that probably isn't practical for most beginning makers. However, there are many other tips and tricks of construction that make this one of the best out there as far as I'm concerned. I watch it over and over. Plus, Gene's a gem of a human being.

Knifeart.com doesn't seem to have any videos, but their book selection is excellent. I could spend my whole allowance right here!

Finally, I just did a Google search for "knife making video" and came up with this eBay auction . I've never seen this video before and the bid is over $20 now for a one-hour tape, so not the best deal on this list. But it's one good way to find stuff.

To find out if knife making is something they might want to do without investing a lot of cash, some people have bought pre-ground blades or knife kits from one of the supply houses like TKS. I haven't built a kit but it seems like it might be worthwhile if you have any doubt whether this is something you'd get into. Frankly though, before you've finished the first knife you'll almost certainly be planning the next...

Good luck! Keep reading here too, this is the most helpful bunch of people on Earth and they'll share a wealth of experience with you.

No prob, dude...glad you liked 'em.

And thanks for the responses, guys. Right now I'm in the process of reading Wayne Goddard's books--the $50 Knife Shop and the Wonders of Knifemaking. Books are great, but video's are a lot easier to follow.

I'd been considering a knife kit, but I think I'd still need to drop some cash for a sander/grinder to do the handles, right? All I know is that I really don't have any equipment to speak of and not a lick of experience--but I guess I gotta start somewhere.

Hey Dave, The video by Jim Downs is new to me. I heard he was giong to make one ,but did not know it was out. He is a great knifemaker and a fantastic guy. Should be good. Man knows his stuff. Mark

Mark, thanks, I'll start watching for his video again. Seems I can watch people making knives for hours... :D
